Why Cameron Diaz Returned to Acting After a Decade in Netflix's Back in Action

As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a silver screen star, I must admit that Cameron Diaz’s return to acting after her self-imposed hiatus is nothing short of thrilling. Having grown up in the ’90s, I can vividly recall the charm she brought to iconic films like “The Mask” and “There’s Something About Mary.” Yet, it was her performance as Princess Fiona in the “Shrek” franchise that truly solidified her status as a beloved actress.

Cameron Diaz recently disclosed the reason behind her decision to emerge from a hiatus and star in her latest Netflix film, “Back in Action.” For quite some time, it seemed impossible to avoid seeing Diaz on the big screen. Her breakout role in 1994’s “The Mask” paved the way for a bustling career that quickly made her one of the most demanded actresses in Hollywood. She collaborated with many prominent figures in the industry. However, following her appearance in the 2014 adaptation of the Broadway musical “Annie,” Diaz opted to step away from Hollywood, effectively retiring. Although she remained active with various other endeavors, she maintained a low profile in the entertainment world for personal reasons. Now, she has divulged why the present moment is ideal for her return to acting.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Diaz emphasized that she took a break from acting to focus on nurturing her family. Married to Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, they are parents to daughter Raddix and son Cardinal. Diaz expressed her desire to “reclaim control over her life“, as she phrased it, and made clear that nothing could sway her decision to prioritize self-care and create the life she desired. Now feeling settled with herself and her family, the actress believes the time has come to return to her profession.

At the perfect moment for us as a family, we found ourselves ready to move on after spending so much time at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although many people were declaring it over, my husband and I felt it was not yet our time. We needed to motivate ourselves to make a change, and my amazing partner, who has always been supportive, encouraged me by acknowledging all that I’d done for our family and his businesses. He expressed that it was now our turn to support me in pursuing my dreams. His words of encouragement were like a spark igniting my determination – “Go ahead, show me what you can do, girl.” And so, we embarked on this new journey together.

In a highly anticipated return to acting, audiences will first witness Cameron Diaz in her significant new project, marking their third collaboration with Jamie Foxx. This follows their previous ventures in “Any Given Sunday” from 1999 and the adaptation of “Annie”. Titled “Back in Action“, this film is slated for release on Netflix in early 2025. In this action-packed spy thriller, Diaz portrays Emily, a former agent who is drawn back into espionage alongside Foxx’s character Matt, after their hidden identities are unveiled. The actress chose this project as her comeback vehicle due to her strong acting partnership with Foxx. As she expressed, “I couldn’t turn down Jamie. He said, ‘Join me,’ and I replied, ‘Alright, let’s do it; it’s our third film together, so it’s really exciting.’
