The Penguin Episode 4 Earns Near-Perfect IMDb Rating

As a longtime fan of DC comics and a connoisseur of gritty, crime-ridden stories, I must say that HBO’s The Penguin has quickly become one of my favorite shows this year. The fourth episode, Cent’Anni, featuring Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, was nothing short of mesmerizing. Her performance was so captivating that it made me forget I was watching a TV screen and felt like I was right there in the heart of Gotham’s underbelly.

Recently debuted a month ago, HBO’s “The Penguin” has been garnering consistently high ratings from its audience, managing an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This latest DC television offering shows no signs of slowing down, as the release of episode 4 last weekend further cemented “The Penguin’s” reputation with a near-perfect score on IMDb.

In the fourth installment of the hard-hitting crime miniseries titled “Cent’Anni,” Cristin Milioti (known for her role in “Palm Springs”) portrays Sofia Falcone, a character alleged to be a ruthless serial killer engaged in a power struggle with Oz Cobb (portrayed by Colin Farrell) over Gotham’s criminal empire. Milioti’s impressive acting skills from earlier episodes have garnered praise from fans, which likely contributed to the episode centered on her background attaining the highest viewership ratings thus far for “The Penguin.” An astounding 10,000 viewers on IMDb rated this episode an incredible 9.5 out of 10, surpassing the previous episode, “Bliss,” which received a 9.1/10. After accumulating 35,000 ratings, the show currently holds an overall rating of 8.8/10, reflecting slightly lower reviews from the early episodes.

The overwhelmingly favorable reception towards “Cent’Anni” clearly showcases the significant advancements made by “The Penguin” since its initial appearance on September 19th. Critics across the board have applauded Milioti’s performance, with one review from ScreenRant remarking:

In my viewpoint, Cristin Milioti is an extraordinary powerhouse of talent. I found myself utterly captivated by her performance during the harrowing Arkham initiation scene, where she endured mistreatment and was reduced to a cowering version of herself. Yet, much like a fierce, wounded creature, she transformed beyond recognition in the third act, embodying a character reminiscent of a chilling horror movie villain – a testament to her exceptional acting skills within this series.

Other admirers similarly lauded “The Penguin” for its chilling portrayal of Arkham Asylum, a well-known setting to DC enthusiasts that has been reimagined numerous times. As one IMDb review states, “Arkham Asylum has always been penned as horrific and likened to hell itself, but no other portrayal has managed to give viewers a harrowing glimpse into the experience of an inmate confined within Arkham’s walls.

Following Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Batman and related stories have moved towards greater realism, shedding many of the superhero elements traditionally associated with comics. While some fans yearn for a closer adherence to the original material, The Penguin series manages to make an impact despite its gritty, realistic backdrop. This show shares similarities with Matt Reeves’ Batman, which also garnered positive reviews, but presents a unique viewpoint that deviates from the affluent areas of Gotham City typically frequented by Bruce Wayne. The series offers a raw, unseen perspective of the city’s dark underbelly, setting it apart even further.

Based on its extremely favorable response, the outlook for The Penguin appears quite promising. Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential second season, although one hasn’t been confirmed yet – even the creators of the series are considering expanding Oz Cobb’s narrative further. It appears doubtful that HBO would terminate such a well-received show, but ultimately its future hinges on The Penguin‘s continued success in terms of ratings and positive feedback throughout its 10-episode run.
