‘Dune: Prophecy’ Will Explore “Boundaries of What It Means to Be Human”

As a dedicated fan of the Dune saga, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming series, “Dune: Prophecy”. Having grown up with Frank Herbert’s epic novels and being captivated by Denis Villeneuve’s recent film adaptations, I am eager to delve deeper into this mesmerizing universe.

At New York Comic Con last Thursday, I was thrilled to hear the cast and creators of the upcoming Dune series share tantalizing details about the show and its connection to Denis Villeneuve’s films. They gave us a glimpse into what we can expect when it debuts on HBO and Max.

For an hour, a panel featured sneak peeks of upcoming footage, as well as the presence of showrunner Alison Schapker, executive producer Jordan Goldberg, and actors Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez, Josh Heuston as Constantine Corrino, Chloe Lea as Lila, and Jessica Barden as young Valya Harkonnen.

The panel commenced with a trailer hinting at problems “more than just limited to Arrakis,” featuring obstacles for the King concealed subtly, as well as a quest to obliterate the sisters from existence. Following this, Schapker revealed the starting point of the series, commenting, “we are in the midst of wars’ shadows” and in the aftermath of the battle against artificial intelligence. The showrunner added, “Computers, thinking machines, have been banned. But who knows if they haven’t found ways to survive elsewhere in the universe?” He continued, “Given their absence, humans must try to fill the gaps that were once filled by technology. As a result, humans are attempting to explore and challenge what it truly means to be human.

Towards the end of the discussion, Schapker noted that their show is centered around themes such as power, truth, narratives, and the influence of charismatic leaders. He questioned whether we should admire or be wary of such leaders, and brought up the TV series “Dune” as a thought-provoking exploration of how power functions both in the open and secretive realms.

This sisterhood holds significant influence in public spheres, taking on roles as truthsayers. They’re seated among the powerful, educating young girls, and subtly infiltrating noble households. Yet, they also wield power from behind the scenes. This duality echoes across various eras and invites us to ponder questions about power dynamics, even in our current times. In the films, they’re at the zenith of their authority, making strategic moves, but shrouded in a sense of mystery. What makes this series compelling is that we delve into their private spaces, revealing their inner workings without stripping away their enigmatic quality.

She hinted that the series will reveal the Atreides, along with an early phase of the Harkonnens, before they transform into the monstrous form from 10,000 years ahead. Instead, it’s about sowing the seeds of the Harkonnen family in a previous era, where we encounter individuals who possess immense power and are prepared to go to extreme lengths to attain their objectives, harboring a deep-rooted grudge.

Regarding the connection between the upcoming show and the latest Dune films, Schapker expressed high regard for Villeneuve’s movies, stating that they not only set a high standard but also managed to make Dune accessible and exciting for many viewers. The team behind the show aims to maintain this level of quality, striving to uphold a distinct part of the Dune universe.

Later on, during a conversation about the Dune Experience activation and costumes, the cast and crew team also hinted at the impressive work done by the production team. “From top to bottom, our team has delivered exceptional work, and I believe this is a reflection of Dune, as well as the storytelling that drives people to delve deep and bring it to life with passion,” the showrunner expressed. “Every detail was meticulously examined, thought about, and carefully planned. It truly shines through.

This television version of the prequel to director Villeneuve’s two-part film adaption of Frank Herbert’s renowned science fiction novel, “Dune,” focuses on two Harkonnen sisters fighting against the perils that endanger humanity’s future. Along their journey, they form the Bene Gesserit order.

As a devoted fan, I had the privilege to attend an insightful discussion about the upcoming Dune: Prophecy series. This gathering, involving key creative minds and cast members, shed new light on the ongoing struggle for power and control hinted at in the previous two teasers. The highly-anticipated premiere is set to grace our screens on HBO Max and regular HBO channels starting November 15.
