‘It Felt Anything But Iconic’: Chris Hemsworth Gets Real About What Happened The Day He Filming The Avengers’ Team-Up Scene

As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s seen every movie multiple times and even made a few trips to Albuquerque, New Mexico myself (not for the weather though), I have to say that the making of the Avengers was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The behind-the-scenes stories are as epic as the battles on screen!

Regardless of whether you’re a Marvel enthusiast or not, it’s hard to deny the significant influence that the Marvel superhero franchise has had on popular culture, particularly with its recent expansion into more television during the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A pivotal early event was when Earth’s strongest heroes united to vanquish Loki and his extraterrestrial army. One memorable scene from this original group of six heroes (Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, Black Widow) involved them forming a line-up. This iconic moment served as a cultural reset for the superhero genre in the ensuing decade; however, Thor himself has revealed that this is not an entirely accurate depiction of events.

As you know if you’ve watched the Marvel movies in order, the MCU’s Phase One revolves around six heroes who came together to form the Avengers, and therefore the 2012 film with the same title formally introduced the group. The actors that portrayed these characters did such a good job that it really felt fantastical watching them all together, so it’s easy to forget they are just regular people. In an interview with Jake Hamilton, the co-host of ReelBlend, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) revealed that the feeling in the studio that day was not at all what was later shown on screen.

Experiencing something far from legendary, our filming took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico where temperatures seemed to touch 400 degrees. Clad in leather and plastic costumes, we’d perform push-ups between takes in a desperate attempt to build some muscle. Oh, the heat! The crew was puzzled, asking questions like “What is this scene? What are we doing?” as the camera shifted here and there, encountering technical difficulties. All of this took place on a soundstage, adorned with a green screen. It just didn’t seem to capture the allure or magic that would later appear on-screen. The contrast between our hot, chaotic reality and the polished, romantic scenes was striking.

I wonder if the core six knew what they were creating. It all came together in the end, but it definitely went through trial and error first. According to Zak Penn, the original Avengers writer, his script was scrapped by director Joss Whedon after years of work, and the new writers almost had another villain involved in Loki’s schemes. Not to mention that The Wasp was almost written in, but later replaced by Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow. I can’t imagine the Russian assassin being left out of this movie, as she’s the glue that holds the team together.

It’s astonishing to realize that much of what we see in Marvel films is actually green screen and special effects added later. Despite this, it’s remarkable how these productions manage to impress us. Known for their grandiose, high-intensity production, Marvel sets are a delightful experience for the actors who have worked on them. Given the significant impact that these movies have had on popular culture, many actors find themselves closely associated with their characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, most of these actors do not regret being part of this franchise.

It’s quite possible that some familiar MCU actors could make a comeback in the near future. Rumors suggest several veterans will return for the upcoming “Avengers” films. Despite a new team taking center stage, expect to see some veteran faces on screen, with Robert Downey Jr being one of them. However, instead of playing Iron Man again (who perished in Endgame), he’s been confirmed for the role of Doctor Doom. I must say, I’m thrilled about his return, and it’s not just him. In a sense, the Russo Brothers are returning to direct these upcoming “Avengers” films, titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

I’d be thrilled to join the original “Avengers” team conversation given all these fresh updates and reveals about the franchise, particularly after Robert Downey Jr.’s announcement of his return. I can only imagine they found out before the public press release, and I’d gladly spend money just to witness their reactions when that news was unveiled.

To stay updated with all the intricate plots within the franchise, consider subscribing to Disney+. Frankly, I might need a refresher too, considering how the multiverse has become increasingly complex with its numerous interwoven stories. Although my Marvel-loving heart yearns for the original Avengers to reunite (please, multiverse, make it happen), I’ll be content with behind-the-scenes insights until that day arrives.
