Simon Cowell, Who First Formed and Signed One Direction, on Liam Payne’s Death: “I Feel Empty”

As a long-time fan and admirer of Simon Cowell’s incredible contributions to the music industry, I can only imagine the profound grief he must be experiencing following the untimely death of Liam Payne. Having been instrumental in the formation and success of One Direction, the bond between them was more than just professional; it was a shared dream that brought joy and inspiration to millions around the world.

Simon Cowell, who was instrumental in creating One Direction and initially signed the famous boy band, expressed that the passing of Liam Payne has left him with a profound sense of emptiness.

The internationally acclaimed boy band that consists of Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik originated from Simon Cowell’s reality TV show, “The X Factor,” in the year 2010.

Alongside Nicole Scherzinger, Simon Cowell chose the male contestants from among aspiring singers and guided their group throughout the competition. Following their third-place finish, the music tycoon signed them to his label Syco Records, resulting in sales exceeding 70 million records.

After the sudden, heartbreaking death of Payne at 31 in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, there was an outpouring of sorrow throughout the music world and beyond. Cowell also postponed filming for Britain’s Got Talent. On Friday, he posted on Instagram: “It’s only when something like this occurs that you truly understand your feelings about someone.

Liam, I’m utterly shattered and heartache personified. There’s a hollow space within me that seems unfillable. Yet, I want you to understand the profound affection and admiration I hold for you. Every drop of tears I’ve shed is but a testament to our bond. This moment is exceptionally challenging for me to articulate, but I feel compelled to share something important.

Upon hearing about Payne’s demise, the ex-members of One Direction also expressed their tribute to Payne in a collective statement, “We are utterly heartbroken by the news of Liam’s passing. As time goes on and everyone is ready, there will be more words to share. But for now, we need some time to mourn and cope with the loss of our dear brother. The moments we spent with him will always hold a special place in our hearts. For now, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans who adored him as much as we did. We’ll deeply miss him. Our love goes out to you, Liam.

According to the Buenos Aires police, John Payne suffered “severe injuries” after falling from a hotel balcony, leading to his immediate death. Later, the Buenos Aires Security Ministry informed the Associated Press that Payne had jumped from the balcony of his room. The authorities stated that they responded to an emergency call regarding a potentially aggressive man who might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The local medical examiner’s report indicates that Payne passed away due to severe injuries and both internal and external bleeding. Officially, his death is being treated as an unexplained or suspicious case, as stated by the local district attorney, following standard procedures for investigation.

Cowell’s connection with the band members following their separation has come under close examination. At one point, Payne expressed: “We [One Direction] were significantly overworked. I had no private life, I didn’t learn anything about myself… I was merely existing as a secluded pop star, terrified of people, always confined indoors. I needed to halt, undoubtedly. It would have been fatal for me.

Cowell has previously stated that Styles, Horan and Tomlinson had been “incredibly loyal” to him.
