I asked her, being the only one still involved in the franchise as a writer for the “Starfleet Academy” series and co-creator of the upcoming live-action comedy, if she would work towards preserving “Lower Decks'” legacy after its conclusion. The actress and writer was straightforward about this, mentioning one of the key reasons for setting the series with Justin Simien:
“I’ve always wanted to work with my friends on projects, and since we can’t bring them into our current reality without spoiling anything, we decided to set our idea in the 25th century. This way, we can include characters from different Star Trek franchises like Picard, Lower Decks, and even keep Jonathan Frakes’ face as it is without needing to de-age him. We haven’t planned anything yet, but that was the main reason for choosing this time period.
The actress mentioned that while the series hasn’t been given the go-ahead officially, she expressed her desire to collaborate with her co-stars from Star Trek: Lower Decks if the chance arises. It might not be the live-action spinoff some have envisioned, but Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien have developed a show that could pave the way for numerous appearances by characters hailing from the 25th century.
