According to recent updates from Deadline, it appears that director Luca Guadagnino is nearing a deal to helm a fresh take on American Psycho for Lionsgate Pictures. Insiders suggest that this new version of American Psycho will be more aligned with Ellis’ original novel rather than a rehash of Mary Harron’s film. The screenplay for this adaptation is being penned by Scott Z. Burns, who has previously worked on suspenseful films like Contagion and Side Effects with Steven Soderbergh.
Initially, Lionsgate intended to create “American Psycho” as a television show. However, discussions with director Guadagnino led the studio to reassess the property as a movie, given his distinctive vision for it. A direct-to-video sequel titled “American Psycho 2” featuring Mila Kunis was released in 2012. In 2013, a musical stage adaptation premiered in London with Matt Smith portraying Patrick Bateman. Given its enduring success, it’s no wonder Lionsgate is considering another remake of “American Psycho” after so many years.
