As someone who has grown up with Disney movies as a staple of my childhood memories, the news about Moana 2 is nothing short of exhilarating! The anticipation for this sequel has been building ever since we were left on that cliffhanger at the end of the first movie.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement about Moana 2, which seems poised to break some serious records according to early box office predictions. Frankly, it’s a refreshing turn of events for Walt Disney Animation after three consecutive Thanksgiving weekends that didn’t quite live up to expectations.
According to Deadline, Moana 2 is projected to have a box office opening of over $100 million during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, potentially even reaching up to $115 million. This prediction comes from tracking service Quorum. If these numbers hold true, it would surpass the opening of the first Moana movie, which earned $82 million over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2016. Moreover, if Moana 2 manages this impressive opening, it will break the record for the highest opening for a film launching on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, surpassing Disney’s Frozen from 2013, which made $93.5 million. Interestingly, both Moana 2 and the original Frozen were released on November 27th.
It appears that Moana 2 is expected to lead the pack when it comes to opening weekend earnings, surpassing the predictions for both Wicked and Gladiator II. These two live-action films are set to debut a few days before Thanksgiving, giving them an early advantage over the animated Disney sequel. According to current projections, Wicked is estimated to make anywhere from $64 million to $75 million on its opening weekend, while Gladiator II is expected to bring in around $42 million to $47 million. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting that Moana 2 is the upcoming fall movie that has generated the most awareness and excitement among audiences. With these three films hitting theaters, the holiday box office is set for a significant boost after a relatively sluggish September and October.
Moana 2 Will Set Disney Back on Track
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Disney has typically launched a major film and achieved significant box office success with movies such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled, Frozen, and Moana in recent years. However, the last few Thanksgivings have been challenging for Walt Disney Animation. Although Encanto was successful on Disney+, its $40 million five-day opening weekend box office performance was considered underwhelming, given the circumstances of theaters reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic. Strange World, released in 2022, flopped at the box office with a disappointing $18 million over the holiday weekend. Despite an ambitious promotional campaign for Wish, celebrating Disney’s 100th anniversary, it opened to a modest $31 million over the Thanksgiving weekend. Moana 2 appears poised to revive Walt Disney Animation.
Should the predictions hold true, “Moana 2” is poised to further bolster Disney’s success in 2024. Following a challenging 2023 that saw box office disappointments such as “Wish”, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, “Haunted Mansion”, and “The Marvels”, 2024 has been a significant rebound year for the company. This is largely due to the unprecedented success of films like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”, which have topped the box office charts this year. Moreover, titles from 20th Century Fox under Disney, including “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and “Alien: Romulus”, have also been successful. With high expectations for a strong opening weekend and continued success throughout the holiday season, “Moana 2” could potentially be one of the biggest movies of 2024.
Moana 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2024.
