10 Netflix Series Canceled on a Cliffhanger

10 Netflix Series Canceled on a Cliffhanger

As a long-time binge-watcher and a connoisseur of the streaming world, I can confidently say that these shows have left me as bewildered as a cat on a hot tin roof!

Netflix, a prominent streaming service, is recognized for constantly releasing numerous TV shows. To keep these shows running, Netflix requires a specific viewer count to ensure their investment is worthwhile. In essence, their approach can be likened to blindly throwing darts at a board and seeing what sticks. Occasionally, a show becomes an enormous success, such as “Stranger Things.” On other occasions, a series might get terminated before it fully gains momentum, regardless of whether its final episode left viewers hanging with a major cliffhanger. If the viewer count is insufficient, then that season finale will inevitably serve as the series finale.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I find myself standing before you today, mourning the untimely demise of ten exceptional Netflix series that were snatched away from us far too soon. These shows captivated our hearts and minds with their promising storylines, only to leave us hanging at the edge of a tantalizing cliffhanger, never to be resolved.

10 Sense8 (2015)

The show “Sense8” was a science fiction series that focused on eight individuals from diverse parts of the globe. These people found themselves mysteriously linked in terms of mental and emotional experiences. This captivating series was jointly developed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the masterminds behind “The Matrix,” who were also primarily responsible for writing and directing several episodes.

Sense8 was one of the most eagerly awaited Netflix productions back then, amassing a dedicated fanbase in the process. However, when Netflix decided to cancel the show following a major season 2 cliffhanger, fans were incredibly upset. Their dissatisfaction and criticism reached such a peak that Netflix eventually relented. As a result, they produced a two-and-a-half-hour series finale to appease the fans and bring the story to a close. Consequently, this show ranks higher on our list due to Netflix’s response to fan demand.

9 Daredevil (2015)

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I vividly recall the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s global domination. Netflix was home to a game-changing series that breathed new life into the iconic Daredevil, a character once marred by one of the worst superhero films – the 2003 iteration with Ben Affleck in the lead role. This Netflix production was a masterful blend of action, darkness, and unrelenting seriousness. It boasted an exceptional ensemble, with Charlie Cox portraying a badass Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio delivering a deeply empathetic Kingpin, a Marvel villain who resonated profoundly.

Among its high praise and extensive audience, Daredevil was one of Netflix’s most popular series. A scene after the credits in the season 3 finale hinted at the appearance of the Marvel villain, Bullseye – a character who met a violent end in the 2003 movie.

The situation shifted significantly when Disney regained control over Daredevil. Instead of Netflix continuing the series by paying a substantial licensing fee, Disney opted to manage the distribution themselves. Consequently, Daredevil departed from Netflix and moved to Disney+, where you can still watch all three seasons. However, Disney initially didn’t develop the Daredevil series further, letting it go as if discarding an undesirable habit — until this moment. A reboot of Daredevil on Disney+ titled “Daredevil: Born Again” is scheduled for release in March 2025, and it will welcome back some members of the original cast, including Cox and D’Onofrio.

8 The Chair (2014)

As a movie enthusiast, I must share my thoughts on “The Chair,” a dramedy series that Amanda Peet masterfully created. Sandra Oh, an exceptional actress, donned multiple roles in this captivating show. However, one point often raised by fellow cinephiles was the brevity of its storytelling. With only six episodes, it seemed challenging for “The Chair” to gracefully manage all its ambitious narrative threads.

The show titled “The Chair” ended abruptly after just one season, leaving viewers intrigued about the unfolding relationship between Ji-Yoon (Oh) and Bill (Jay Duplass), as well as the fate of Ji-Yoon’s struggling English department.

7 The Midnight Club (2022)

As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement for Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind some chilling Netflix successes such as “The Haunting of Hill House”, “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, and “Midnight Mass”. Unlike his previous works, his upcoming series, “The Midnight Club”, was intended to span over two seasons instead of a miniseries.

Season 1 of The Midnight Club ends with a cliffhanger. The friendly doctor who runs the hospice is not who she says she is, with her tattoo hinting at her secret involvement with a cult. Because of a dip in viewership, The Midnight Club was canceled. Netflix couldn’t be bothered with producing just one more season of this two-season show and wrapping up its story. Fortunately, Flanagan, out of the kindness of his heart, revealed what he had planned for season 2 on Tumblr, including the fates of the show’s characters and the answers to its unresolved mysteries.

6 Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

The show, known as “Santa Clarita Diet,” was a unique blend of horror and comedy. It starred the experienced actors Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore. The story revolves around a couple, Joel (portrayed by Olyphant) and Sheila (Barrymore), who are real estate agents. Their mundane lives take an unexpected turn when Sheila exhibits signs of transforming into a zombie. An interesting tidbit: “Santa Clarita Diet” was filmed using only one camera.

The third season finale of Santa Clarita Diet concluded with a zombie spider entering Joel’s mind and Sheila attempting to rescue him by biting him. Unfortunately, this is the last scene we witnessed as the show, Santa Clarita Diet, was unfortunately discontinued after season 3, leaving Joel’s destiny undecided.

5 Black Summer (2019)

Black Summer is a spin-off from the well-liked post-apocalyptic series, Z Nation, airing on Syfy. Unlike Z Nation, which takes place three years into a zombie outbreak, Black Summer unfolds only six weeks following the initial zombie apocalypse. Netflix produced two seasons for this show. However, the streaming service decided not to continue with season 3 because of mediocre reviews and low viewership numbers.

The final episode of Season 2 concludes in a way that leaves questions about the characters’ futures unsolved. One of these puzzles includes identifying the anonymous pilot and determining where his aircraft is heading. These are some of the many mysteries that remain unanswered even after the show has been terminated.

4 Space Force (2019)

The less-known Netflix series, humorously titled “Space Force,” revolved around a team assigned to set up a novel division of the U.S. military – you can take an educated guess as to which branch this is. Starring big names like Steve Carell, John Malkovich, and Lisa Kudrow, it’s surprising that not many have heard about this show. Perhaps its low popularity is why Netflix decided to end “Space Force” after just two seasons.

In an unexpected twist, the second season of this humorous TV show concluded with a suspenseful moment – it was revealed that Space Force had found a massive asteroid heading towards Earth. The sequel left viewers guessing about what might happen next, as Netflix didn’t provide any further details. If you’re a fan of Space Force and can’t wait to see a comedic portrayal of an asteroid-induced catastrophe, then you might want to watch Don’t Look Up on Netflix. It could offer some resolution for your curiosity.

3 Archive 81 (2022)

In the vein of its namesake podcast, the series “Archive 81” revolved around a character who takes on the role of an archivist. This individual unwittingly becomes entangled with a potentially harmful cult after being hired to restore a peculiar collection of videotapes. The show garnered significant attention, ranking among television’s most popular programs and amassing more than 128 million hours of viewership worldwide.

A vast number of viewers tuned in for the final episode of season 1, where the archivist found himself time-traveling to a hospital in 1994 upon waking up. Anticipating more from Netflix, fans were on edge for another season, but instead, the streaming service chose to hold off on renewing Archive 81, leaving viewers just as puzzled as the cliffhanger ending of that first season.

2 Mindhunter (2017)

David Fincher’s “Mindhunter” series had great potential. It delved into the world of the FBI during the late 1970s, focusing on the establishment of its criminal profiling unit. This show featured several infamous serial killers, whom the FBI interviewed to gain insights into their psychology and apply this understanding to active investigations. Originally intended for five seasons, “Mindhunter” fell short of its goal. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the show moved at a deliberate pace that was too slow for audiences to connect with it and justify its cost. Consequently, Fincher’s series was terminated after only two seasons.

The two seasons of “Mindhunter” hinted at the emergence of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, Dennis Rader, who was also known as the BTK Strangler due to his gruesome methods of binding, torturing, and murdering his victims. The season finale in part 2 left BTK still at large. Unfortunately for “Mindhunter” fans, the show got canceled before its conclusion. However, they can always turn to Wikipedia for more information and complete the storyline.

1 1899 (2022)

Since the series “Lost” concluded in 2010, there’s been an ongoing quest for a show packed with twists and mind-bending mysteries. Many productions have attempted to fill this void, and Netflix’s “1899” was one of them. Instead of focusing on a diverse group whose plane crashed on a puzzling island, the story revolves around a band of European emigrants who encounter strange happenings while voyaging aboard a steamship in 1899. But is it all as it seems?

In a surprising turn of events and a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, the final episode of season 1 suggests that all we’ve witnessed so far is merely a virtual reality scenario, with the actual year being 2099. Despite garnering positive reviews and maintaining strong viewership numbers, making it the most popular Netflix offering in 58 countries at one point, 1899 was unfortunately not immune to Netflix’s decisions. The streaming service ultimately chose to abandon their plans for two more seasons.

Could it be because the series from 1899, being the most expensive German TV production ever made, is facing cancellation? Fans have expressed their displeasure on social media platforms and even started a petition to save the program, which has amassed over 100,000 signatures. However, such support may not be enough to resurrect this show from its current state.
