As a die-hard fan of the Karate Kid franchise and Cobra Kai, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel, Karate Kid: Legends! The trailer that debuted at New York Comic Con was like a dream come true, showcasing the combined talents of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan.
Fans of both The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai have been granted a sneak peek at the trailer for the upcoming sequel, Karate Kid: Legends. However, only some were fortunate enough to witness it firsthand, as the martial arts-themed project’s trailer was unveiled exclusively at New York Comic Con. This exclusive viewing offered a glimpse of the combined talents of Ralph Macchio and another prominent star.
Through Variety’s disclosure, we now have a glimpse of what the trailer holds, showcasing some thrilling karate sequences featuring the main characters. The trailer hints at the storyline as Daniel LaRusso (played by Macchio) journeys to Beijing, pursued by Mr. Han (Chan), who has been searching for him. Daniel takes on a new pupil, Ben Wang from “American Born Chinese,” portraying Li Fong. The trailer suggests that Daniel and Li Fong will be mentored by the duo, but it remains to be seen if their teaching methods align.
The trailer reportedly “shows off plenty of fight scenes in the streets and at a dojo, including some kind of new karate tournament that was briefly teased.” Which sounds like everything that any Cobra Kai and Karate Kid fan could want. The trailer revealed one “particularly impressive moment,” which finds Li Fong fighting off “a bully in an alleyway by swinging off a fire escape ladder and flipping off the wall. As the star of “American Born Chinese,” Wang has some stunt experience, and it certainly shows in the trailer.”
Karate Kid: Legends Is Due To Hit Theaters on May 30, 2025
Director Jonathan Entwistle, recognized for his work on “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F***ing World”, will lead “Karate Kid: Legends”. The studio is planning to market the film as a blend and continuation of the original series’ mythology. Rob Lieber, known for writing Sony’s “Peter Rabbit” and Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day”, has penned the script. The main cast includes Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Ben Wang as Li Fong, along with Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Wyatt Oleff, and Jennifer-Lyn Christie in supporting roles.
The series Karate Kid: Legends is an expansion of the popular ’80s franchise, gaining momentum after the immense success of the show Cobra Kai. This new installment welcomes viewers back to the company of characters like Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, who have been a hit on Netflix. With the main series, Cobra Kai, concluding in the ongoing Season 6, the creators are eager to continue the storyline with fresh characters. Additionally, they may introduce some familiar faces again in upcoming spin-offs. Hints of a potential prequel for Mr. Miyagi have been dropped by creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg.
One explanation for incorporating the Miyagi box tale into this season was to spark intrigue surrounding Mr. Miyagi’s past and delve deeper into his life. This is something we’ve been eager to explore for quite some time. We had discussions with Robert Mark Kamen, the author of The Karate Kid, who based the entire movie on his Okinawan karate-teaching sensei. Our conversations about Miyagi’s background have proven invaluable as we develop season six content.
After wrapping up our work, we can finally dive into new projects! Lately, all our attention has been on Cobra Kai and its completion. Currently, we’re in the midst of editing the final few episodes. When that task is finished, we hope to share some thrilling developments with you!
