Elijah Wood Says Hunt for Gollum is Not a Lord of the Rings Cash Grab

Elijah Wood Says Hunt for Gollum is Not a Lord of the Rings Cash Grab

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of experiencing the magic of cinema, I can confidently say that the return of Middle-earth is not just another cash grab by Warner Bros. Discovery, but a much-anticipated reunion for fans of the beloved Lord of the Rings franchise.

Star has spoken out against critics who call “The Hunt for Gollum” a greedy move by Warner Bros. Discovery, as it’s one of their major intellectual properties that CEO David Zaslav plans to “utilize” in the future. With this, “The Lord of the Rings” is returning to the big screen with two new live-action movies, but not everyone is thrilled about the prospect of another installment in the fantasy series.

Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” was criticized as an overreach by Warner Bros., as the story was expanded to accommodate three films instead of the initially planned two. Now, ten years later, Andy Serkis is taking on the director’s role for the upcoming film “The Hunt for Gollum.” Some have labeled this project as a cash grab or exploitation of Tolkien’s work. However, actor who played Frodo Baggins, Elijah Wood, expresses a different viewpoint in an interview with Inverse:

I’m truly thrilled about this! The creative team behind it is a favorite of mine, particularly since they were the ones who brought Lord of the Rings to life. I’ve got a personal interest because the same talented group will be working on this project. There’s no one more fitting than the original creator to guide this movie, as they truly understand and embody the character. It feels like reuniting with old friends for something extraordinary and distinct.

The prospect of additional movies set within that universe becomes intriguing primarily when Pete, Fran, and Philippa, along with their New Zealand-based creative team, are involved.

In discussing film franchises, it’s fair to say we all have some apprehension. There’s often a feeling of skepticism – will they ruin something cherished? Might it be merely a money-grabbing attempt to capitalize on a particular property?

The Lord of The Rings Will Have More Than One New Movie

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been buzzing about the speculations surrounding “The Hunt for Gollum” being a two-part film, sparked primarily by Ian McKellen’s comment last month. However, according to Wood, he suspects that there are more movies following this one, a point that screenwriter Philippa Boyens recently reinforced in an interview with Empire Magazine. In essence, Wood is hinting at the possibility of additional films in the series.

It seems as though there will be a few more films set in the same universe as The Lord of the Rings, but offering fresh tales connected yet separate. Frankly, with all the diverse stories that could potentially unfold, I can hardly wait to find out what they decide to create!

There’s been much discussion about whether any of the original cast from “Lord of the Rings” might appear in the upcoming film. With nearly 22 years passed since the premiere of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” which places “The Hunt for Gollum” in between, it could be challenging for many of the original actors to convincingly reprise their roles – despite some, like McKellen, having expressed a desire to return. With the film set to hit theaters in 2026, we likely won’t have to wait long to discover who will take on the main characters this time around.
