As a movie reviewer who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and twisted realms of horror cinema, I can confidently say that Bruce Campbell’s latest venture into the macabre, “Hysteria!”, is a must-watch for any fan of the genre. With its 1980s setting, small-town atmosphere, and Satanic Panic themes, this series ticks all the right boxes.

Under the scrutiny of everyone, Peacock’s latest horror thriller titled “Hysteria!” has been causing quite a stir. Notably, series star and legendary actor from “Evil Dead“, Bruce Campbell, recently shared with MovieWeb that the eight-episode journey is both “terrifyingly chilling” yet “exciting”. And he’s absolutely right!

1980s-set story by showrunner Matthew Scott Kane centers around inhabitants of a small town navigating the “Satanic Panic.” Starring Julie Bowen (from “Modern Family”), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”), Nikki Hahn (“Adventures in Babysitting”) among others, this series offers a mix of suspense, fear, and a dose of absurdity. Campbell, one of the cast members, remarked that it includes:

As someone who has spent a good portion of my life steeped in religious studies and theology, I can attest that the idea of Satan being real is a topic that instills fear and unease in many Americans, myself included. Growing up in a small town where strange occurrences were not uncommon, I’ve had personal experiences that have left me questioning the unknown. For instance, there was the time when my neighbor’s barn mysteriously caught fire in the middle of the night, or when our family dog began behaving erratically and eventually disappeared without a trace. These incidents left us baffled, as we couldn’t find any logical explanations for what had happened. If you’re someone who takes their faith seriously, these kinds of events can stir up feelings of discomfort and uncertainty, making it difficult to shake the notion that something supernatural might be at play.

As a movie critic diving into the chilling world of “Hysteria!”, I can tell you that this film takes a peaceful town named Happy Hollow by storm when its star quarterback mysteriously vanishes. A trio of high-school misfits, who’ve never found their place in the crowd, seize the opportunity to form a Satanic metal band, tapping into the town’s newfound fascination with the supernatural. However, as a string of murders, abductions, and eerie phenomena arise, suspicion begins to fall upon them, leaving everyone questioning who – or what – is behind these terrifying events.

It’s no surprise that the ’80s Satanic Panic’ spread so quickly, given how frightening the idea was,” said Campbell, who portrays a reputable cop in a series unsparing with pentagram symbols. “In the ’80s, with Ronald Reagan’s ‘God Bless America,’ and the slogan ‘Don’t Do Drugs,’ everything was clearly divided between good and evil, and perfection was expected under that idealistic world.” Campbell further explained:

Whenever such instances arise, there will always be individuals who respond, “I prefer to abstain.” This response is often a reflection of the societal circumstances. Musicians might label their music as ‘death metal,’ rather than simply ‘heavy metal.’ Such a choice is an act of defiance or rebellion.

Hysteria! streams on Peacock October 18. You can watch it here .
