As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who’s seen more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride, I can confidently say that the upcoming Knives Out 3, or Wake Up Dead Man, has me on the edge of my seat. The cast alone is like a who’s who of Hollywood, with heavyweights such as Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, and Jeremy Renner (though I still can’t believe they let him play himself in Glass Onion). And now, Josh Brolin, another Marvel alum, has joined the ensemble.
Titled “Wake Up Dead Man”, the third installment of Knives Out, set for release in 2025, promises a fresh wave of murder mystery and a new appearance for Daniel Craig. Joining him is an impressive ensemble cast featuring Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, and Jeremy Renner, despite his unusual role in Glass Onion. Additionally, joining the latest Knives Out mystery are stars Josh Brolin, another Marvel veteran, and he’s recently shared insights about the project!
As we’re yet to see a trailer, many aspects of the movie Wake Up Dead Man, including its plot and characters, are still shrouded in mystery, similar to the unsolved murder at the heart of the film itself. However, one thing that’s clear is that Josh Brolin appears to be playing a substantial role in it.
At New York Comic Con, the former star of ‘Dune’ was queried about his part in ‘Knives Out 3’. In reply to this question, as shared by People, the actor subtly hinted at something related to the project.
I can’t say what I played. It scared me, which I wanted to be scared.
Is it possible that this role could surpass his portrayal as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a performance that was particularly intense? This new character seems capable of challenging even Thanos, which leaves me apprehensive about what this movie might entail – in a thrilling way. I don’t believe the actor from “Avengers: Infinity War” is suggesting his character is the antagonist, as that would be predictable. However, he could be attempting to mislead us…
It’s no secret that director Rian Johnson’s Oscar-nominated murder mystery series is full of unexpected surprises. I’ve long since given up trying to guess the twists and turns in advance. The success of ‘Knives Out’ was so significant that it earned Rian a massive deal with Netflix for the franchise’s sequels, making the Knives Out films some of the standout productions on their legacy streaming platform. The star of ‘Outer Range’ attributes this not to chance, but rather to Johnson’s skillful direction – which is precisely why he was already a fan of his work, as he expresses:
I loved the acting in both of them. I preferred the first one, and the third one felt more like the first one. [Rian] doesn’t come off as this, but he has this incredible control over his set. You know, he just has a major presence that reminds me of Denis [Villeneuve, Dune and Sicario director], that reminds me of the Cohens, that reminds me of those types of directors. And he’s a great writer. … I read it and I was just like, ‘God, this is so well written. We just don’t read things like this anymore.’
While you can’t deny the quality of the writing, there’s also no denying the star power that propels these movies. As Kerry Washington put it, it’s like summer camp for the actors, where you can’t wait to see which celebrity friends hop off the bus onto the set. When it was announced there would be a third installment of the franchise, fans took to the internet to share some pretty unhinged dream castlists too, showing how much anticipation there is to see this ensemble together.
In Brolin’s opinion, there couldn’t be a more perfect group of actors for this movie, as he said:
It became clear that it was a production involving many individuals I had previously collaborated with, as well as those I deeply admired yet hadn’t met, such as Andrew Scott and Josh O’Connor. The experience, in retrospect, remains one of my most cherished job assignments to date.
As a gamer, I’ve gotta say, the main characters are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the fun in movies like Knives Out. One thing that always gets me hooked is the surprise appearances from famous faces. You can bet your last game credit on a Joseph Gordon-Levitt cameo – he’s popped up in every film by Rian Johnson, whether it’s 500 Days of Summer or something else entirely.
Indeed, I share a similar level of anticipation as Brolin, eagerly looking forward to our eventual on-screen collaboration.
There are only so many guesses and assumptions to be made though when it comes to the mystery that’s about to unfold. While I’ll eat up every behind-the-scenes teaser the cast has to offer, I really need a trailer soon.
Based on Jeremy Renner’s statement, it appears that the movie was completed in August. We’re eagerly waiting for a teaser trailer featuring Josh Brolin’s intriguing character to be released. Until that happens, if you want to remind yourself about where we last saw the brilliant detective, you can stream Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with a Netflix Subscription.
