As a dedicated fan of James Gunn and his extraordinary journey in the realm of filmmaking, I must say that this latest update has left me absolutely thrilled! The man behind “Superbad” taking the helm for two episodes of Peacemaker season 2? Sign me up! And let’s not forget about John Cena’s transformation – it’s like watching a phoenix rise from the ashes. I can only imagine what he’ll bring to the table this season.
Over the weekend, James Gunn and the ensemble of his forthcoming animated series titled “Creature Commandos” in the DC Universe, made an appearance at New York Comic Con. They shared their excitement about a production that promises to surpass all expectations with an unprecedented twist.
At the panel, the show’s executive producer and writer was accompanied by Dean Lorey, another executive producer, along with voice actors Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), David Harbour (Frankenstein), Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky), Steve Agee (Economos), Maria Bakalova (Princess Ilana), Alan Tudyk (Dr. Phosphorus) and Sean Gunn (GI Robot and Weasel). They presented a series trailer and discussed the upcoming episode, which marks the beginning of the new DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Gunn clarified during the discussion that each DC Studios project will stand independently, with its unique identity. He emphasized that this approach would be distinct from the upcoming ‘Superman’ series. Referencing ‘Green Lanterns’ and ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, he explained that while they share a connected universe, there won’t be a unified aesthetic imposed across all projects.
According to Lorey, the style being used is reminiscent of Eastern Europe and aims for a grounded yet stylish look, with a predominantly dark color scheme that leans cool. While it maintains an action-focused approach, differentiating itself from shows like Harley Quinn, it presents a more mature feel.
Gunn discussed the initial stages of the series development, which had already been initiated prior to his taking over at DC Studios. “The scripts were written when I became CEO of DC Studios,” he explained. “I’d previously spoken with Max about creating something following the success of Peacemaker. I also discussed an animated series with Peter Girardi. I have a soft spot for the Creature Commandos, and I adore monsters, especially those from stories like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. It just seemed fitting to move forward with this idea.” He added, “I wrote the scripts without a deal in place. Fortunately, I was later offered the job at DC Studios, which I gratefully accepted.
At the panel discussion, each actor playfully revealed aspects of their character, some of which were portrayed as complex, fearsome creatures. Nathan Fillion hinted, “Prepare to uncover where everyone originated from, their roots, and it’s absolutely chilling.” He further mentioned, “There will be instances that leave you stunned, appalled, and emotionally touched, only for the same characters to later make you laugh, then squirm due to their extreme violence and moral degeneracy.
Regarding other guest roles, Linda Cardellini and Michael Rooker will join the cast, lending their voices to the series. Gunn also highlighted Indira Varma, who couldn’t attend the panel but is providing the voice for the main character, the Bride. Additionally, Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller. “She delivers such a powerful performance,” said Gunn. “She brings humor and emotion to her character. She truly elevates the series. I’m lucky to have her in both my personal life and career.
As a devoted admirer, I can say that, when it comes to Frankenstein, Gunn emphasized he drew inspiration from Mary Shelley’s initial narrative for the character. “Sure, it has its own unique spin,” Harbour explained to the audience, “but you’ll find this tale of Frankenstein and his Bride carries a touch of tradition. It’s a well-known theme, but it’s also an incredibly original interpretation, and it’s some truly captivating storytelling. I simply can’t wait for everyone to experience it because I think they’ll be genuinely surprised by how fresh and engaging it is.
In addition, Grillo hinted at the inclusion of more mature portrayals of romantic interactions: “Maria and I shared a very intense, explicit scene that was quite steamy. Watching it with my 16-year-old son was… well, let’s just say it was a bit traumatic.” Gunn then amused the audience by saying, “I have footage of Frank and Maria in the recording booth trying to convince them to participate, and they were making out passionately, moaning and wrapping their hands around each other.
Tudyk remarked, “This series is intended for adults and includes mature themes, among which is sexual content.” Regarding the level of explicitness throughout the production, Gunn commented, “There was one scene in particular that I felt went too far. I toned it down a bit, but not significantly.
Lorey mentioned that despite the comedic nature of “this series,” as well as Harley and Kite Man, there was an element of seriousness dramatized. He explained they treated relationships gravely during emotional moments such as death, but aimed to evoke strong feelings from viewers. This approach, he added, allowed for a blend between comedy and drama, providing them with the chance to delve deeper into emotional storytelling than they could in a purely comedic series.
When queried on whether he’d consider bringing these animated characters into live-action, Gunn affirmed that certain characters might appear in both formats.
He not only mentioned, but it’s worth noting that Rick Flag is featured in Superman, and he plays a significant role in season two of Peacemaker. In our casting process, we aimed to find actors capable of portraying these characters convincingly in live-action, particularly for the main characters.
In a future discussion regarding potential appearances of these characters within the DC Universe, Gunn mentioned that there are plans for other projects featuring some of these individuals. He emphasized, however, that while there might be hints to previous events, viewers won’t need extensive knowledge of DC lore to enjoy it. “Above all, this is about telling a compelling story. We want viewers to come to Creature Commandos without preconceived notions, and instead, be thrilled by the experience.” He continued.
As a gamer delving into this thrilling new series, I can’t help but chuckle at the notion that we’re following a format reminiscent of the captivating “Lost”. The opening episode brings our team together, but from there on out, each subsequent episode peels back layers of mystery surrounding one of these characters. Instead of their origin story, we delve into aspects of their past, shedding light on how they ended up where they are today. This approach allows us to bond intimately with the characters, discovering that some might be more capable than initially perceived, while others may surprise us by harboring darker secrets. It’s an exciting journey, one that promises to reveal hidden depths and keep me hooked!
At some point, Gunn clarified to those who have drawn comparisons between the series and his other misfit stories, stating that “This is more like Guardians of the Galaxy, but without the emotional depth. The characters aren’t flawless, and neither are the narratives; characters perish, not always for a specific reason, like when Yan dies at the end of Guardians 2. Sometimes it’s just a tragic incident. It’s a more somber story in many aspects, but hopefully, equally captivating.
The DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation series was hinted at as early as June 2023, during an Annecy panel with executives from Warner Bros. Animation, Max, and Adult Swim. In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Suzanna Makkos, EVP of original comedy and adult animation at Max and Adult Swim, discussed Gunn’s wholehearted approach and his deep affection for the content. According to Girardi, EVP of alternative programming for Warner Bros. Animation, Gunn brought a unique touch to it, expressing compassion for the ‘monster’ characters. Makkos stated, “I’ve never worked on anything like that before.
As a dedicated fan, I too was privy to Gunn’s latest insights into various DC Studios projects in progress. Among them were updates on Peacemaker, Superman, Supergirl, and the Lanterns. Below, I’ve shared some highlights of what’s brewing for each!
‘Peacemaker’
Yesterday, Gunn shared that he wrapped up filming for the series last night and will resume shooting on Monday. During this discussion, he also offered insights about John Cena’s remarkable progress throughout the show, as well as praising the work of a director in the series. “The new series is going incredibly well,” Gunn stated. “We have Greg Mottola, an outstanding director known for ‘Superbad’, directing two of the best episodes from season 2 – episodes two and three. Honestly, I’ve never seen anyone improve as much in such a short span of time. John Cena was fantastic during the first season, but this time around, he truly takes ownership and delivers an exceptional performance.
‘Superman’
Regarding Superman, Gunn shared updates on his previous comments about Krypto the dog hero, praised actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, and gave some details about edits and release dates for trailers.
Krypto has truly impressed me throughout this project. During the editing phase, he’s proven to be an exceptional addition to the story, making a significant impact on my personal perspective when writing the script. His entrance into the project transformed everything. David Corenswet is poised to astound audiences; he embodies the ideal movie star that many aspire to become. I believe his talent, both dramatic and comedic, surpasses expectations. He’s one of the best physical action stars I’ve ever collaborated with… Gunn expressed, before being playfully interrupted by another panelist. ‘I feel confident about it, and I’m tough on productions, so it’s been a pleasure… A trailer isn’t far off, but we won’t reveal it too soon.’
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’
Gunn discussed that the movie would draw inspiration from Tom King’s comic “Woman of Tomorrow,” describing it as an original, distinct spin on the superhero genre. He also mentioned that he had recently watched Ruthie’s screen test.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work on another fantastic project – Supergirl. Writer Anna Nogueira blew me away with her pitch, and I was immediately hooked. She wrote it up in no time, and each draft just got better and better. Director Craig Gillespie has been a joy to collaborate with, and I’m eagerly awaiting its release. This project follows a three-act structure, which sets it apart from others by weaving various stories together while focusing on the major characters and themes.
‘Lanterns’
A significant portion of attention went towards actor Aaron Pierre, who was recently unveiled as John Stewart in DC Studios, and it was additionally disclosed that he nearly secured a role for another superhero character.
I’ve been eager to collaborate with Aaron Pierre for quite some time now. Not many know this, but he was nearly chosen for the role of Adam Warlock. He’s an exceptionally talented actor, and I’ve admired him since the start of his career. Their reading session with Kyle was one of those rare magical moments. Regardless of what others may be saying, I just can’t get enough of their chemistry together.
