As a film enthusiast who has been following the DC Universe for decades, I must say that the recent updates on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Superman (2025) have me thoroughly excited! James Gunn’s praise for both the director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Ana Nogueira fills me with confidence in this upcoming film. The casting of Milly Alcock as Supergirl, along with David Corenswet as Superman, seems spot on to me.
The movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” won’t soar until 2026, but James Gunn’s recent update is an exciting development. At this year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC), the co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios expressed high praise for both the film’s director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Ana Nogueira. During his NYCC appearance, as reported by Bleeding Cool, James Gunn commended their work.
The individuals in charge of writing and directing are doing an exceptional job leading the project. Filming is set to begin in January, right here in England. I recently saw a trial run featuring Milly Alcock, and I must say, it’s really thrilling! Ana’s idea for Supergirl was among the most impressive pitches I’ve encountered. This production is inspired by Tom King’s comic “Woman of Tomorrow,” but there will be some alterations in its storyline. Nonetheless, it will retain the same characters and themes.
Actress Milly Alcock, known for ‘House of the Dragon,’ secured a prestigious role earlier this year: she will portray Superman’s Kryptonian cousin, Kara Zor-El, in upcoming film productions. Alcock outshone other talented contenders like Emilia Jones from ‘Locke & Key’ and ‘CODA,’ as well as Meg Donnelly of the ‘Zombies’ franchise, to earn the privilege of wearing Kara’s iconic red and blue costume when the movie premieres in summer 2026.
James Gunn Updates When Superman Trailer Will Drop
Fans of superhero films have had an exhilarating weekend, and before his NYCC appearance, James Gunn was already leaking spoilers for his anticipated 2025 Superman film. On a Tuesday, he shared the first glimpse of DCU’s live-action Krypto. However, during his visit to NYCC, Gunn discussed when we can finally see the first trailer for Superman. According to Superman Homepage, the director stated:
“It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but also it won’t be soon.”
It’s true that the trailer update was rather mysterious, as is often the case with this director. Yet, during his visit to NYCC, Gunn made a point to commend David Corenswet, our leading actor who assumes the role of Superman in the DCU. Gunn went on to express:
David Corenswet is set to astound everyone. I believe his dramatic, comedic, and physical talents are not fully recognized by many.
For Gunn, directing Superman is just the start in the DC Universe. As a key figure at DC Studios, he’s hinted at taking on more projects beyond Superman’s initial big-screen appearance, but he hasn’t specified which titles might be next. Given the significance of Superman’s debut in the DCU, it’s understandable that Gunn is being cautious – a good thing!
Previously, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hinted at an exciting showdown between his temporary Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s adored Superman. Regrettably, this clash didn’t occur. However, it appears that Gunn is avoiding a similar predicament: acting prematurely.
