As a long-time fan of Michael Keaton and Beetlejuice, I must say that watching him grace the SNL stage once again was an absolute delight! His monologue was hilarious, especially when he playfully scolded Andy Samberg for using the infamous “BJ” term. It’s been 36 years since the original Beetlejuice graced our screens, and it’s heartening to see that the charm and humor of this iconic character still resonates with audiences today.
This year, Michael Keaton has been experiencing tremendous success by reprising his role as Betelgeuse in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. Over the weekend, he took on hosting duties for a new episode of “Saturday Night Live”, the popular comedy show. Although he’s played numerous roles throughout his career, during the monologue, it was the “ghost with the most” that seemed to reappear.
“Boy, I’m thrilled to be back as the host for Saturday Night Live during its 50th season!” He first appeared in 1982 when he hosted the fifth episode of Season 8. However, that particular show isn’t particularly memorable, as The New Joe Jackson Band was the musical guest, and it wasn’t one of SNL’s standout moments – a creation by Lorne Michaels.
Indeed, it appears that Saturday Night Live is the hotspot for hosting today. Being asked to appear is truly an honor, and Keaton seemed thrilled to join the cast for a week and display his comedic talents. It was just a matter of time before he referenced the well-known character during the monologue.
As Halloween approaches, I’m anticipating lots of cute little ones roaming around dressed as Beetlejuice, it’s just so endearing. However, when grown men in their 40s do the same thing, well, that’s not quite as charming.
Just as anticipated, some individuals in their 40s took to the stage to join him. First up was Mikey Day, one of the cast members, dressed in a Beetlejuice outfit. He excitedly declared “The Juice is free!” before requesting Keaton to utter one of his famous lines: “‘Alright, can I call you Mike? I’m a huge fan of Beetlejuice, it’s my all-time favorite. Could you do me a favor and say, ‘It’s showtime?’
In a surprising turn of events, Andy Samberg, dusting off an old script from his SNL days, made a guest appearance in the monologue to deliver a line. Using a voice reminiscent of Beetlejuice, he said: “Mike, let me explain something. I used to work here, and during my time, I repeatedly attempted – and failed – to bring more Beetlejuice into this show.
As a dedicated cinephile, let me recount an amusing exchange between two talented actors, Keaton and Samberg, during a movie set visit. Keaton gently reminded Samberg, “Hey, mate, skip the BJ, stick with Beetlejuice instead.” This prompted Samberg to exclaim, “No repeating that name! If you say it thrice, I’m out of here.” In an effort to move things along, Keaton sought out another cast member, the charming Sarah Sherman, who, dressed for the part, continued to delight us with iconic lines.

Indeed, 36 years have passed since Tim Burton brought his unique vision of the afterlife to life in the groundbreaking horror-comedy “Beetlejuice.” Now, he’s back with a sequel. The movie, titled simply “Beetlejuice,” was released globally on September 6 and has become one of the standout genre blockbusters of the year. It’s raked in over $425 million at the box office and is being celebrated as Tim Burton’s official comeback to his quirky, captivating world.
In a different era, creating a film with the same visual flair and storyline as before would be challenging due to changes in audience preferences and the passage of nearly four decades. However, Tim Burton has managed to preserve the spirit of his original character while introducing fresh faces to cater to younger viewers. The end product is a sequel that evokes nostalgia yet maintains an element of quirky novelty. With a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say the movie has been successful, but whether there will be a third installment remains to be seen as Burton contemplates his next move.
