Smile 2 Quickly Dominates the Box Office on Opening Weekend

As a movie enthusiast with over two decades of cinema-going experience under my belt, I must say that this weekend’s box office performance was nothing short of thrilling! The success of “Smile 2” is a testament to how audiences crave terrifying tales that keep them on the edge of their seats.

In the spirit of Frank Sinatra’s song, “When you’re happy, everyone seems to be,” it’s clear that Paramount Pictures is overjoyed as their anticipated horror sequel, Smile 2, has triumphantly taken the top spot at the box office during its premiere. Director Parker Finn’s continuation of his 2022 hit, Smile, raked in an estimated $23 million (as reported by The Numbers), securing the first position this weekend.

In a close competition, The Wild Robot and Terrifier 3 were neck-and-neck for the second and third positions. Although it wasn’t quite a tie, Chris Sanders’ animated movie managed to secure the silver with earnings of $10.1 million, keeping Terrifier 3 at bay. On the other hand, Terrifier 3, with David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown, had an impressive second weekend grossing $9.3 million, showing it was a force to be reckoned with in the box office.

In a continuation, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice persisted in joining the queue, as Tim Burton’s eerie sequel secured the fourth spot with another $5 million earnings. Achieving such a sum of money is quite remarkable since the 1988 follow-up of Beetlejuice has been screening in cinemas since September 6, and this highly anticipated film can also be enjoyed from home on digital platforms.

Last weekend, “Terrifier 3” dominated the box office, but “We Live in Time,” a romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, began its limited release quietly. Directed by John Crowley, the emotional love story generated an average of $45,000 per cinema before expanding to around 1,000 locations this weekend. As a result, “We Live in Time” ended up in the Top 5 for the weekend with an estimated earnings of $4.2 million. This leaves the most underperforming film of the fall season in its wake.

Regrettably, “Joker: Folie à Deux” hasn’t been performing well at the box office. The film by Director Todd Phillips, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, could only gather enough revenue to secure the No. 6 spot with $2.2 million. Disappointingly, this long-anticipated sequel to “Joker” (2019) is still falling short of hitting the $200-million mark globally. As of now, this “Folly” à Deux, which comes with a hefty $200 million production budget, has only garnered $191.9 million worldwide. With advertising and marketing costs taken into account, achieving profitability for Warner Bros. remains an unattainable goal.

Despite the fact that Halloween has been unkind to “Joker 2”, two timeless Halloween favorites are capitalizing on fans’ enthusiasm for All Hallows’ Eve on the big screen. Tim Burton’s cherished “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is flourishing during its re-release for the spookiest of holidays, as the animated film earns a spot at No. 10 with $1.1 million in ticket sales.

Firstly, we have the Sanderson sisters from “Hocus Pocus” (1993) that narrowly missed being in the Top 10 with a box office of $841,000 at the 12th spot. On the other hand, the week’s best per-theater average belongs to Sean Baker’s latest film, “Anora,” which earned an impressive $90,000 at each theater in its limited release (6 locations). However, the most buzz is surrounding the anticipated box office performance of “Venom: The Last Dance.” This marks Tom Hardy’s final appearance as the Spider-Man villain in Sony’s symbiote trilogy, set to hit theaters on October 24.
