‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Overtakes ‘Barbie’ In All-Time Domestic Box Office Receipts

As a hardcore movie enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, let me tell you, the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine has truly been a rollercoaster ride for me! From its record-breaking opening weekend to its consistent streak of breaking records and outshining other blockbusters, this film has proven to be an unstoppable force.

This weekend, the box office streak of Deadpool and Wolverine’s R-rated movie from Marvel Studios and Disney reached a new high as it overtook Barbie to claim the 12th spot on the list of highest-grossing films in the U.S., without considering inflation adjustments.

Over the weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine earned an additional $679,000 following Disney’s decision to expand the film’s theater count from 990 locations to 1,500 nationwide as a last promotional effort before its cinematic release concludes. By Sunday, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman blockbuster had amassed a domestic total of $636.3 million, closely matching Greta Gerwig’s and Warner Bros.’ critically-acclaimed meta-comedy’s $636.2 million earnings within the same timeframe.

Despite the success of Deadpool’s third installment, Barbie continues to surpass it with a global earnings of $1.446 billion. This PG-rated, family-oriented film ranks 15th on the list of the highest-grossing films worldwide at the box office.

Just like the global phenomenon that is Deadpool and Wolverine, they hold the record as the highest-grossing R-rated films ever made. Over the past weekend, they pushed Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi out of the top 20 box office list, taking its spot instead. As of this weekend, their combined worldwide earnings have reached an impressive $1.336 billion.

This summer blockbuster featuring Marvel’s grumpiest superheroes has shattered numerous box office records since its release, such as having the largest opening weekend for an R-rated movie, raking in a staggering $211 million. Globally, it ranks as the seventh highest-grossing film out of 31 Marvel releases, and domestically, it’s the fifth biggest earner.

In 2024, the movie starring Deadpool and Wolverine ranks as the second highest-grossing film so far, with earnings trailing only behind Pixar and Disney’s Inside Out 2. The sequel to Inside Out has made a whopping $652.9 million within the U.S., and an impressive $1.694 billion worldwide.
