As a lifelong fan of Batman, I must admit that I was initially excited for Joker: Folie à Deux. Having followed the character since his inception and seen numerous interpretations over the years, I was eager to see what Todd Phillips would bring to the table. However, after watching the movie, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment.

A previous actor from Batman has voiced his opinion on the debated ending of a film – noting that the controversial sequel isn’t the first to employ the tactic of introducing a false Joker character. Although this individual might not be the first name that pops up when discussing Batman actors, he did wear the cape and cowl for a short period during the final season of the popular series Gotham, and he has recently expressed his thoughts on the movie via his TikTok account.
Mazouz opens his video by stating that in his opinion, the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led comic book film has been excessively criticized. He explains that as a character exploration of the Joker, there is a great deal of performance art about Arthur Fleck – since, after all, that’s what the Joker embodies: transforming suffering and hardship into “art” through laughter, music, and spectacle.
And no spoilers, but the ending…Gotham has done that before. It has. It has….it just has.
Joker’s Sequel Did Not Live Up to Expectations
For most of the year, it appeared that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe (DCEU), before James Gunn takes over in 2025, were poised to benefit by releasing only two major, eagerly awaited films each. Marvel’s summer releases of Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, proved successful, ranking among the top-grossing movies of the year and one of Marvel Studios’ most critically acclaimed films after two years of mixed reviews. However, the October release of Joker: Folie à Deux in theaters presented a contrasting scenario.
The film “Joker: Folie à Deux” faced a rough start, receiving poor critical reviews initially, and no subsequent events managed to salvage the $200 million production. On its debut weekend, it earned only $38 million domestically, which was just one of many humiliations for the movie. The insults continued to pile up as its Rotten Tomatoes scores plummeted, even surpassing some of the most scorned comic book movies in recent times. On its second weekend in theaters, it was quickly outperformed by “Terrifier 3”, a low-budget horror film by Damien Leonie, which claimed the top spot on its debut weekend without much competition.
In approximately a month from its theatrical debut, the film “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit home media. For comparison, “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiered in cinemas on July 25, but wasn’t made available for purchase or rental digitally until October 1 – a full two months later. Despite the vastly different box office performances of these two movies, it will be intriguing to see how many viewers opt for the digital release of “Joker: Folie à Deux” and, in time, its streaming version as well.
