Kajol says DDLJ's Raj and Simran won’t exist today; feels they would make sure to have 'four other options'

As a long-time follower of Bollywood, I must say that Kajol’s recent insights into the evolving nature of relationships and modern dating have struck a chord with me. Her unfiltered attitude and ability to stay connected with the pulse of society is truly commendable.

Due to advancements in societal norms concerning relationships over time, it is reasonable to assume that iconic couples from ’90s movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s Raj and Simran might be significantly different today. For instance, Kajol, who played the memorable character of Simran, has suggested that if these characters existed in the present, they would communicate via WhatsApp and each have several other romantic interests besides each other.

Kajol is recognized for her straightforward acting style and appreciated for her candid demeanor. Lately, she commemorated the 29-year anniversary of her film DDLJ, which debuted back in 1995. While on the fourth season of Expresso, she was posed a question about what the main characters Raj and Simran might be like in 2024.

Originally, the actress expressed doubt that the characters from the story would still be together today, implying a deep affection between them. In a different context, she pondered about contemporary relationships. She suggested that Raj and Simran could potentially be communicating via text messages, a common practice among young people, and have numerous potential partners available to them at any given time, which is often referred to as “benching” in the Gen Z generation’s vernacular.

She stated, “In today’s world, Raj and Simran might not have become a couple. They would likely exchange messages on WhatsApp and explore four alternate options each. Simran may have had Harish, Sanjay, and others on a dating platform, while Raj would have the same. I’m unsure if the love story between Raj and Simran could flourish in today’s context.

Modern dating views from the actress might not align with expectations of film enthusiasts today. Conversely, Dilwale Dhulania Le Jayenge, now 29 years old, remains unmatched in Indian cinema longevity. This beloved romantic drama, directed by Aditya Chopra and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, still graces the screens at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre, drawing fans who appreciate its charm. The film’s enduring appeal lies in the captivating on-screen chemistry between the two leads.

In terms of her professional life, Kajol recently appeared alongside Angad Bedi, Mrunal Thakur, and others in Lust Stories 2. Currently, she is working on films such as Sarzameen and Maharagni—Queen of Queens.
