As a child of the 90s, I have fond memories of Scooby-Doo and his gang solving mysteries with their trusty van, The Mystery Machine. However, as I’ve grown older, I find myself appreciating the series more for its ability to blur the lines between friends and foes, monsters and humans.
Scooby-Doo is a long-lasting entertainment brand that dates back more than half a century. Its central figure is Scooby, a talking canine, who belongs to Mystery Inc., an ensemble team known for solving mysteries in their distinctive green van named the Mystery Machine. Alongside Scooby, you’ve got Velma, the sharp-minded detective, Fred, the self-styled group leader, Daphne, the stylish yet affluent member, and Shaggy, the easily frightened one who usually prefers snacking. The franchise has produced numerous animated and live-action movies and series over the years.
14 Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins (2009)
Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins” is one version of how Mystery Inc. first united and tackled their initial case. They all find themselves serving detention together, similar to the setup in “The Breakfast Club”. A ghost shows up, causing chaos at a school pep rally and eventually resulting in the temporary shutdown of their educational institution.
Scooby Gang Origins
Right off the bat, Scooby encounters spectral figures emerging from a tombstone. This sets the stage for viewers to expect some genuinely spooky entities. Although the movie also features common villains like bullies, the supernatural beings are the ones that grab everyone’s attention.
13 Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000)
In many portrayals of Shaggy and Scooby, it’s often emphasized that their greatest passion is for food. However, in the movie titled “Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders“, an unexpected twist unfolds as they develop feelings for living beings. The duo finds themselves pursued by extraterrestrials, waking up in a desert where they’re met by a charming photographer named Crystal and her handsome canine companion, Amber.
A Groovy Movie
With her bell-bottoms and use of ’70s speak, Crystal is essentially the female version of Shaggy. He’s so enamored that he belts a song about their future which includes babies (both humans and puppies). Together, they investigate the alien sighting. Getting answers, however, may risk their new relationship.

12 The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo (1985)
The television series titled “The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo” aired from 1985 to 1987. In its debut episode, Scooby and Shaggy are deceived into releasing the Chest of Demons, causing thirteen ghosts and demons to roam freely. Throughout their adventures, ranging from the Himalayas to Morocco, the gang endeavors to subdue these fearsome entities.
A Perfect Binge Watch
This series, consisting of only thirteen episodes, has the shortest run in the Scoobyverse. It offers a unique twist on traditional characters, featuring The Three Stooges as female witches. Though it may not be a top pick among Scooby-Doo enthusiasts, The 13 Ghosts remains an enjoyable viewing experience.
11 What’s New, Scooby-Doo?
Season 3, Ep. 13 – “Reef Grief” (2005)
The Scooby-Doo franchise has expanded with three new seasons and forty-two additional episodes, bringing us something like “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” but with advanced technology for the gang to use in their investigations. Unlike many of the previous episodes which focused on fake monsters, one particularly popular installment from this series actually featured a genuine creature.
Mystery Inc., Down Under
In the third season, “Reef Grief” unfolds in sun-soaked Australia, where Scooby and Shaggy participate in a sandcastle-building competition. Yet, a terrifying coral creature is causing panic among beachgoers. This new location offers an amazing backdrop and keeps the tradition of thrilling monster chases that fans are fond of alive.

To keep his event going, Dracula resorts to a method for manufacturing a new werewolf. Unfortunately for Shaggy, he finds himself next in line for this unwanted transformation.
The Last of Scrappy-Doo
This film boasts a colorful array of entertaining characters. Among them are fresh additions such as Dracula’s minions and Shaggy’s love interest. Also making an appearance is Scrappy-Doo, a character less favored in the franchise, often criticized as bothersome. However, for those who found him irritating, this might be his final hurrah before he transforms into a full-blown antagonist in the live-action movie adaptations.
7 The New Scooby-Doo Movies
Season 2, Ep. 3 – “Mystery in Persia” (1973)
Known as “The New Scooby-Doo Movies“, this television series signified a fresh start. Unlike previous seasons, episodes were extended and each one featured a famous guest star or an exciting crossover with characters from well-known shows. In season 2’s episode titled “Mystery in Persia”, the gang encounters Jeannie, Babu, and other characters hailing from the 1973 sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie“.
A Crossover to Remember
It’s cool enough that viewers get to see magical genies, however, those are not the only “monsters” present in this episode. An evil djinn named Jadal wants to prevent a prince from coming into power. Using time travel, Jeannie and the gang attempt to stop Jadal.

In the adventure titled “Scooby-Doo Encountering the Spooky Boo Brothers“, Shaggy discovers he now owns a plantation estate in the south. So Much Going On
In Shaggy’s hiring of the Boo Brothers to drive away the ghosts, he hadn’t foreseen they would be spirits themselves – an unexpected twist that seems beneficial since they’re now on our side. With numerous characters and subplots filling this movie, there are moments when it gets a bit confusing. However, the film manages to maintain its playful tone despite dealing with complex historical aspects in its background.

5 Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)
In the movie titled “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed“, Mystery Inc. finds themselves basking in a newfound level of popularity. They’ve got fan clubs, are often in the spotlight, and are celebrated as heroes. However, as they soar higher, they might just find out that falling harder is an inevitable part of the climb.
What’s Real?
Following a monstrous attack, the group finds themselves under scrutiny by the public. Quickly, they strive to regain society’s favor. Their first task is to determine whether these creatures are genuine or just elaborate hoaxes. This movie blends masked villains with actual monsters, albeit not as impressive as its predecessor. Nevertheless, it offers an enjoyable experience.
4 Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster (2004)
In the adventure titled “Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of Loch Ness,” Mystery Inc. journeys to Scotland to pay a visit to Daphne’s relatives. Upon arrival, they discover that the Loch Ness monster is causing fear among locals by scaring them off. They encounter various townsfolk, some who passionately defend the existence of the Loch Ness monster and others who vehemently argue it’s nothing more than a clever trick.
Could It Be…?
As a movie enthusiast, let me tell you that this film stands out among other Scooby-Doo productions due to its captivating Scotland backdrop. It cleverly weaves in elements of the authentic folklore surrounding the Loch Ness Monster while adding a unique twist to the tale. What’s more, it leaves the story open-ended, keeping viewers guessing. One monster is exposed as a hoax, but just before the end credits roll, Scooby catches a glimpse of something that casts doubt on their final conclusion about the mystery we’ve been chasing.

3 Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1988)
In the movie titled “Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School“, Scrappy-Doo is still on the side of good before his villainous turn. Here, Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy find themselves in a unique position as gym instructors at a school for girls. Unbeknownst to them, these students are actually the offspring of notorious monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolfman, among others.
These “Foes” Are Actually Friends
In this movie, unlike other Scooby-Doo stories, the monsters aren’t concealed. Instead, the main adversaries in Ghoul School are actually a gang of boys from a nearby school. The film doesn’t revolve around catching the monsters but rather explores the unruly atmosphere that comes with dealing with such creatures, eschewing any central mystery.
2 Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
The movie titled “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island” is frequently praised as one of the darkest and most exceptional Scooby-Doo films. The group finds themselves in New Orleans this time, with a hope to finally encounter real monsters. They come across Lena Dupree who informs them about her spooky dwelling on Moonscar Island. Upon arrival, they meet peculiar individuals such as Simone Lenoir.
A Dark Past
Moonscar Island carries a haunting past marked by colonizers who brutally wiped out an entire indigenous community. It’s evident that their spirits linger on the land. However, it also becomes apparent that they are not the only supernatural entities present, and the ones who were once oppressed might now be the oppressors. Mysterious, ominous, and multidimensional, this tale promises an engaging experience for readers of all ages.

The acting in this film is exceptional, particularly Matthew Lillard’s portrayal of Shaggy. It’s entertaining, whimsical, and leaves viewers yearning for a real-life Spooky Island experience.
