Ted Danson Settles Decade-Spanning Dispute With Cheers Co-Star Kelsey Grammer

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent heartwarming reconciliation between Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer has brought a smile to my face. Being a part of the golden era of television, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the rise of some truly iconic characters and actors, and these two gentlemen certainly belong in that esteemed company.

Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer, famous co-stars from the hit series “Cheers,” recently discussed a past argument they had while working together. During the October 23 episode of “Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (Sometimes),” Danson publicly apologized to Grammer for their disagreement during the show’s run. Although they did not reveal specific details about the dispute, Danson acknowledged his role in the conflict and expressed regret to his “Fraiser” co-star.

Looking back on our friendship during the ‘Cheers’ era, I realize we may have hit a rough patch. I remember one instance where I got upset with you, and it seems to be something we both recall. To be honest, it’s left me regretting that I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer’s career. It’s not so much an apology to you, but more a sense of remorse for my inaction during this time. I truly regret not being more engaged and actively participating in our friendship. So yes, I apologize for that.

Grammer clearly appreciated the apology, saying:

“Thank you. I wish we’d spent some more time together.”

Absolutely, having acted together in a television series for numerous years, they naturally spent a significant amount of time with one another, and Danson reminisced fondly about this period, stating, “What an incredible experience, the time we all shared. You can go your separate ways, live distinct lives, but that connection, that passion for creating something genuinely funny and exceptional, remains.” Although some may not realize they had issues in the past, it’s heartening to know that these two legendary sitcom stars have resolved their differences.

Is a Cheers Reunion Looming?

In the television series “Cheers,” Danson played Sam Malone, a former pitcher who owned the bar, throughout its entire 11-season span. In the third season (1984), Grammer joined the cast as Dr. Frasier Crane, a love interest for Shelley Long’s character, Diane Chambers. Grammer stayed on the show until its final season in 1993, and later, Dr. Frasier Crane reappeared on “Frasier.” Grammer continued to portray this character for another 11 seasons until 2004, and he recently resurfaced as the eccentric psychiatrist in Paramount+’s revival, which is currently in its second season.

At the 75th Emmy Awards, Dan Patch and Kelsey Grammer shared a stage during a Cheers cast reunion, along with Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, and George Wendt. Grammer referred to this gathering as a much-awaited get-together of old classmates. With Frasier once again gracing our TV screens (and the character now residing in Boston, where Cheers was set), there’s been a spark of anticipation for another cast reunion. Although Grammer has been reluctant about his character returning to his original Boston haunt, he’s expressed a desire for the Cheers cast members to appear on the Frasier revival series. Regarding Sam Malone, portrayed by Dan Patch, Grammer previously mentioned:

There have been considerations regarding a potential scenario. If it’s indeed the appropriate step, given that Sam Malone is still alive. In such a case, if he has some significant tie that could aid Frasier in relocating to a new location. The entire situation should revolve around progress and humor.
