As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through the complexities of virtual universities and social hierarchies, I must say, the trailer for the new Amazon Prime Video series, “Cruel Intentions,” has piqued my interest. The intricate web of deceit, seduction, and power play depicted in this trailer echoes the strategies I employ to conquer digital realms.
The debut trailer for the Amazon Prime Video remake of the classic 1999 film “Cruel Intentions” has been released, offering a sneak peek at the modernized adaptation featuring Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Selma Blair in their original roles.
In the video, we follow the main characters of the series: Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who control Greek life at Manchester College, a prestigious university in Washington D.C. They find themselves in a predicament when a hazing event backfires, leading them to resort to deceit, manipulation, and charm in an effort to escape the consequences.
Alongside Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, and Brooke Lena Johnson, you’ll find Sean Patrick Thomas reprising his role but as a new character, Professor Chadwick, from the original film.
Paying homage to the original movie, the trailer features a rendition of “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve.
Cruel Intentions hits Prime Video worldwide on Nov. 21.
The eight-episode series, airing soon on Prime Video, is an updated version of the movie that was originally based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ famous novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”. This isn’t the first time “Cruel Intentions” has been adapted for television; it’s at least the third attempt. After the initial film’s release, a spinoff series called “Manchester Prep” was ordered by Fox, but it was canceled before airing. Two completed episodes were later re-edited and some sexually explicit content added to create the direct-to-video sequel, “Cruel Intentions 2”.
In 2015, NBC attempted to create a new series based on “Cruel Intentions,” developing a sequel where Sarah Michelle Gellar returned as Kathryn Merteuil, set 15 years after the original movie. However, the network ultimately decided not to air the show.
Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher take on dual roles as co-head writers, co-showrunners, and executive producers for the project. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty from Original Film also hold executive producer positions, with Roger Kumble joining them in this capacity. It’s important to note that Moritz was the original producer for the film, which Kumble wrote and directed. Bruce Mellon, alongside Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi of Iervolino & Bacardi Entertainment, are listed as producers for this production.
The TV series was developed by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film. In 1999, the movie was co-financed by Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Original.
