As a devoted fan of Good Omens, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon learning that our beloved series is drawing to a close. While the prospect of a feature-length finale is intriguing, it’s hard not to long for more episodes to delve deeper into the fantastical world created by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
Fans of the series “Good Omens,” which is known for being one of the funniest shows on Prime Video, were disappointed to hear that it would only last for three seasons. However, considering the fact that it could have been over after just a single episode, we should feel fortunate that it lasted longer. But now, even our hopes for what was to come have been dashed by the recent news: “Good Omens” Season 3 is no longer in production, and instead, the show will conclude at some point during the 2025 TV premiere schedule in a manner unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Let’s delve deeper into the recent news regarding the TV series adaption of the book, focusing especially on updates from creator Neil Gaiman.
Good Omens Will Conclude With A One-Off Finale
Instead of multiple episodes exploring their beloved relationship further, David Tennant’s character Crowley and Michael Sheen’s character Aziraphale are only receiving one special episode to resolve any remaining issues, allowing them possibly to spend eternity together in a sweeter version of The Odd Couple. This special episode will be a 90-minute TV movie, as reported by Deadline.
Plans have been finalized for Tennant, Sheen, and the rest of the cast to resume their roles in a magical world next year, with filming of the concluding movie set to take place in Scotland around early 2025. Exact release dates are still undetermined at this time.
Neil Gaiman Has Officially Exited The Series Following Allegations
Neil Gaiman, who previously shared co-writing duties and oversaw the show for Good Omens, has formally relinquished these positions. He won’t play an active part in producing the upcoming finale movie. At present, he is expected to be credited for writing parts of the finale, but he will no longer influence the final product.
As a dedicated fan, I can share some intriguing updates about the upcoming project. There are rumors that a new writer might join us to polish the script, but there seems to be no official confirmation yet. Furthermore, it’s uncertain if another production company will get on board, as Neill Gaiman’s The Blank Corporation is no longer part of the picture.
The production for what would initially start in early 2024 as the third season was postponed following accusations of sexual assault made against him by two women. One woman alleged he assaulted her while she worked as his nanny in New Zealand, specifically in February 2022. Another claimed he coerced her into having unwanted rough sex during a consensual relationship in 2003. Two more individuals later added their own allegations of sexual misconduct against him. These accusations were presented through a detailed podcast series from Tortoise Media.
This move regarding “Good Omens” was made recently, about a month following author Neil Gaiman’s proposal to relinquish his creative position in the show, following denials of allegations against him. Notably, this took place approximately one year after Douglas Mackinnon, the original co-showrunner and executive producer who also directed for the series, departed.
