Star Wars Is Exploring Kylo Ren’s Life Between The Last Jedi And The Rise Of Skywalker, And This Is Great News For Reylo Shippers

As a dedicated fan who has grown up with Star Wars as an integral part of my life, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming comic book series, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader. The prospect of delving deeper into Kylo Ren’s psyche and exploring his complex relationship with Darth Vader is nothing short of exhilarating.

Until the release of Daisy Ridley’s Rey movie at a yet-to-be-determined date, The Rise of Skywalker remains the last stop when one is going through the Star Wars movies in order. Set one year after the events of The Last Jedi, Episode IX showed Kylo Ren still leading The First Order after killing Supreme Leader Snoke, but we don’t see much of him actually commanding the military movement. Well, a comic book series is on the way to explore this chapter of Kylo’s life, and the announcement of this project brings some welcome news for those who romantically paired him and Rey in their heads, a.k.a. Reylo shippers.

Marvel Is Publishing Star Wars: Legacy Of Vader

I’m thrilled to share that Marvel Comics has revealed an exciting collaboration between writer Charles Soule and artist Luke Ross for the upcoming series, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader. As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as this limited comic book journey will delve into Kylo Ren’s life in the year spanning between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

Soul, who has a number of writing credits for ‘Star Wars’ such as Marvel’s 2017 ‘Darth Vader’ series and ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren’, which portrayed Ben’s descent into the Dark Side, shared his thoughts on the concept of ‘Legacy of Vader’:

As a gamer embodying Kylo Ren, I’m reeling from the whirlwind of events that have unfolded in such a short span. I’ve clashed swords with not one, but two of my most influential mentors – one being my own uncle – and in that heat of battle, I took the life of my father. The thought of almost killing my mother still haunts me. Now, I find myself holding the reins of a galaxy-wide military force, a burden I’m unsure how to bear. And amidst all this chaos, I’ve discovered an intense bond with another Force-user named Rey.

It’s worth pointing out that Charles Soule hints at a profound bond between Kylo Ren and Rey, which might merely seem like their shared experiences in ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi’, such as their duel on Starkiller Base or their fight against Snoke’s Praetorian Guard. However, insights from ‘Legacy of Vader’ suggest that their connection runs much deeper than these encounters.

Why Reylo Shippers Should Be Excited About This

A significant portion of the ‘Star Wars’ enthusiasts had been shipping Rey and Kylo Ren together since 2015 with the release of ‘The Force Awakens’, but the kiss they shared before Kylo’s death in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ significantly intensified this sentiment. It’s worth noting that some fans were not fond of the kiss, yet director J.J. Abrams refuted the suggestion that their relationship was purely a brother-sister dynamic. With the unveiling of ‘Star Wars: Legacy of Vader’, we now know for certain that Kylo harbored romantic feelings towards Rey, at least in Kylo’s case.

Mark Panicccia, an esteemed editor at Marvel Comics who manages projects like Star Wars titles, recently posted a sneak peek from the initial script of Legacy of Vader on his X account (previously known as Twitter). This preview, free of spoilers, outlines the early phases of Kylo Ren’s history when the comic book series commences.

Fell in love with another Force user named Rey, who subsequently rejected him.

Given that Marvel’s Star Wars comics are recognized as part of the official storyline, we can definitively rule out the sibling relationship between Kylo and Rey. It is clear that Kylo harbors romantic feelings for Rey, but it’s not yet officially confirmed if Rey reciprocated those feelings at the time of Kylo’s death. In The Rise of Skywalker novelization, their final kiss was described as a gesture of gratitude, acknowledgement of their connection, and celebration that they had finally found each other. Nevertheless, the same book also reveals their poignant last words, lending credence to the theory that Rey may have felt romantically towards Kylo as well.
