As a long-time action movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of car chases, explosions, and one-liners, I must say that the news about Die Hard 6 has left me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, the prospect of revisiting the world of John McClane is tantalizing, especially since Bruce Willis’ iconic portrayal of the character has become synonymous with the genre.
20th Century Studios’ head, Asbell, has spilled some beans about the popular action movie series, Die Hard. During an interview with THR, he shared a tantalizing update on Die Hard 6. With Bruce Willis, the face of the franchise, retiring, fans have been content to let the series rest. However, Asbell hinted that this might not be the status quo forever. When asked if there are any upcoming Die Hard projects, Asbell responded…
“No, not yet.”
Although the announcement was brief, the inclusion of “not yet” implies that the studio intends to revisit the action-packed world of John McClane in the future. Unfortunately, the original star of Die Hard, Bruce Willis, is currently unable to act due to aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. As the iconic actor who brought John McClane to life throughout the entire Die Hard series, his last appearance was in 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard. The initial plan for Die Hard 6, which has been in development since 2017, would have seen Willis bid farewell to the character by having him pass the torch to a new actor playing a younger McClane. Director Len Wiseman had previously expressed interest in casting another actor as the young McClane, drawing inspiration from the “Die Hard: Year One” comic book series.
Die Hard 6 Would Have Been Both a Prequel and a Sequel
Nevertheless, even though there were numerous rumors and speculations about the prequel/sequel, the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed in 2021 that it has been put on hold.
Indeed, it’s not moving forward, but here’s an intriguing twist: We initially devised a concept for something else, but it later evolved into what became Die Hard. Essentially, the original idea didn’t resemble Die Hard, but eventually, it did.
It was intriguing about our concept because it provided an opportunity for you to encounter the younger John McClane and utilize Bruce. Thus, it was quite fascinating since you were essentially observing two different aspects of him. In a sense, it resembled “The Godfather Part II” where you see both the young and mature versions of a character.
If the studio considers continuing the Die Hard franchise (as it’s likely they will at some point), introducing a new main character who honors the original films could be an effective approach. Aldis Hodge, who played John McClane’s sidekick in Die Hard with a Vengeance alongside Samuel L. Jackson, previously expressed his interest in reprising their roles together in a future installment.
“You know what? My brother and I and our team, we were actually talking about ‘what would’ve happened if’ a little while back. So we might have to revisit that conversation because I think that would be awesome to see. Absolutely.
Sam is incredibly cool, no doubt about it. I’ve known him since I was eight, and yet, our bond remains strong. You understand what I’m saying, right? It’s just fantastic. I believe he has a wealth of knowledge to share given the magnitude of his career. Working with Sam again would be an incredible opportunity.
