Matt Reeves Teases More Batman Villain Series Following The Penguin's Success

As a die-hard Batman fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of Matt Reeves expanding his “Epic Batman Crime Saga” beyond just The Penguin and The Batman. If given the chance to explore more iconic villains through HBO, Reeves could breathe new life into these characters and create a unique, gripping narrative that will undoubtedly captivate fans worldwide.

If Matt Reeves’ vision prevails, it seems that The Penguin might not be the sole DC villain to star in an HBO series, as he hinted at plans for his “Epic Batman Crime Saga” potentially expanding beyond its current scope. Reeves was the director of the 2022 film featuring Robert Pattinson as Batman and is also an executive producer on The Penguin, which premiered on September 19 and has received positive feedback from viewers so far.

During an interview with The Wrap, Reeves shared that he’s currently negotiating with Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO about expanding the universe he entered a few years back, where he introduced a grittier take on Batman to create a super-noir style that has resonated strongly with longtime fans. He confessed it took some persuasion to get The Penguin series off the ground, but now that it’s proven successful, those in charge are more open to future projects potentially featuring other well-known villains, which Reeves hinted there are several concepts for.

We’re discussing with HBO the possibility of returning to create complex characters that might not typically get such creative freedom, similar to our work on ‘Oz’. HBO seems eager about this concept, and we’re hoping it will materialize. We currently have The Batman and The Penguin projects, and who knows what else could follow?

Which Batman Villains Could Future HBO Shows Focus On?

With “The Batman – Part II” set for a release on October 2, 2026, it’s been suggested that Matt Reeves’ part of the DC Universe will remain distinct from James Gunn’s upcoming projects. This means events in one won’t influence the other, giving Reeves the liberty to introduce any characters he desires in the sequel. So, one can wonder: which villains might make an appearance to star in their own series?

In my opinion, it seems quite plausible that the character who could return is none other than the Riddler, played by Paul Dano in the 2022 movie and currently residing in Arkham State Hospital. Just like Colin Farrell before him, there’s a possibility that we might see Paul Dano reprise his role on TV, but this is purely speculative at the moment. Other potential villains that could be developed further include Mr. Freeze, Hush, Calendar Man, or even the enigmatic Court of Owls, who made their animated movie debut in ‘Batman vs. Robin’ (2015) following brief appearances on TV shows. The direction ultimately depends on Reeves and his choices for characters to introduce in the sequel, which will give us a clearer picture of where things might head on HBO.

Still, this is all good news for fans who are finally getting all the live-action Batman content they crave, which may even lead to a Joker series down the line, since he did show up in 2022 for a brief moment, portrayed by Barry Keoghan. We won’t hold our breath on that one, though, as the Joker is one of those characters who is so iconic, he’s almost too big for TV, and is best reserved for more big screen adaptations that aren’t directed by Todd Phillips.
