She was not just a financial powerhouse, overseeing the global operations of an iconic company, but also a mentor, a leader, and a beacon of kindness in an industry that often lacks warmth.
Laurie Don, who previously held positions as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at The Jim Henson Company, passed away on October 9th in Burbank, according to a statement from the company. At the time of her passing, she was 69 years old. The cause of her death has not been revealed.
In February, Dan stepped down from his role after spending 20 years managing the global financial operations of the company, encompassing Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the Henson Recording Studios, along with production, distribution, and licensing duties.
Prior to working with Henson, she held the position of Controller at Lucas Digital Ltd., which encompasses Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.
In my professional journey, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a controller at Tele-TV, the director of financial controls at Warner Bros. Studio Facilities, and held various positions at Deloitte and Touche, GTN Productions, Viacom, and Paramount Studios.
Laurie has shown outstanding financial and strategic abilities during her 20 years at The Jim Henson Company, but she’s also left an indelible mark on our history by nurturing the professionals she mentored, embodying leadership with compassion, and creating a work atmosphere filled with happiness,” Lisa Henson stated. In simpler terms, Laurie not only excelled in her professional roles, but she also positively impacted many colleagues by mentoring them, leading kindly, and making our workplace a joyful environment.
Don was born on September 17, 1954, and grew up in Highland Park, Illinois. They obtained a bachelor’s degree in film studies from the University of Illinois at Champaign. While pursuing a master’s degree in cinematography from Columbia University, they earned their first screen credit on the 1982 documentary “Say Amen, Somebody”.
After graduating with a degree in accounting from Baruch College, New York, Don acquired her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification while employed at Deloitte and Touche. Subsequently, she traveled extensively for both work and leisure, indulging in the thrill of skiing on some of the tallest peaks across the United States, Europe, and South America.
She is survived by her partner, Deborah; her aunt, Frances; as well as her siblings, Marcia and Russell. A memorial service took place recently in Chicago.
