James Gunn Responds To Report That Dua Lipa Has Been Cast As A Major Heroine For The DCU

As a gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired gaming under my belt, I must say that the DCU’s recent moves have me both intrigued and cautiously optimistic. The casting rumors surrounding Dua Lipa as Zatanna had me excited at first, but James Gunn quickly dashed those hopes with his characteristic no-nonsense approach to debunking rumors.

The strategies of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios are becoming more clear, as numerous projects set within the DC Universe are currently in different stages of production. This includes Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, the forthcoming Lanterns series, and others. As a result, these producers have been securing top-level talent by signing them to contracts. Not long ago, it was reported that the company wasn’t just considering Dua Lipa for a role but had actually secured her for a long-term deal to portray a significant heroine. In response to reports of the renowned singer joining the fray, Gunn offered a comment.

Reports suggest that Dua Lipa might be taking on the role of Zatanna in DC Comics, with whispers indicating she’s agreed to a decade-long contract for this character. On social media, Nerd Talks posted about it, and when a fan asked James Gunn if there was any truth to these claims, he seemed to dismiss the speculation.

1) Up until now, it wasn’t either of those things, but it has been disproven as well. ‘Ten-year contract’? Are they living in the 1930s? I appreciate Dua Lipa, but no.

The director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” has no qualms about dismissing rumors and inaccurate reports, choosing carefully when to engage. Following some official news about the “Lanterns” that emerged last May, this movie maker clarified that he addresses certain DCU rumors but not others, depending on various factors such as whether he perceives something or simply finds a report unimportant enough to respond to. It’s no surprise then that he would clear up any confusion regarding Dua Lipa.

James Gunn clarifies how moments from the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) will be integrated into his DCU (DC Universe)’s official timeline, leaving me a bit puzzled.

There’s a strong desire among some fans, including myself, to see Dua Lipa’s character from “Don’t Start Now” join the DC Universe. Known for her magical abilities, Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of the renowned magician Zatara and has a deep understanding of the supernatural world. Throughout her comic book history, she’s shown great strength and has been a part of teams like Justice League Dark and Sentinels of Magic. It would certainly be intriguing to see her in the DC Universe, though I’m not sure how I’d feel about Dua Lipa portraying her.

There’s a possibility that the producer of the Belko Experiment might have left open the idea of introducing Zatanna, as there could be talks happening about her potential appearance. Moreover, it’s been reported that Swamp Thing, one of Zatanna’s teammates in Justice League Dark, is getting a movie in DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. So it’s not far-fetched to imagine that Zatanna could be incorporated into the storyline at some point in the future.

At the moment, I’m thrilled about the announced plans by DC Studios. We have Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre set to play Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively, for the Lanterns. Additionally, Milly Alcock has been hired for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” I’ll definitely stay tuned for any official announcements regarding Zatanna. In the meantime, I anticipate James Gunn will continue debunking rumors as needed.

On December 5, the first TV series within the DC Universe, titled “Creature Commandos,” will premiere exclusively for Max subscribers. Meanwhile, mark your calendars for July 11, 2025, as the franchise’s initial film, “Superman,” makes its big-screen debut in cinemas.
