Dynamic Duo Will Not Be Released Until 2028 in James Gunn's DCU

As a seasoned comic book aficionado who’s been reading DC Comics since the original Robin, Dick Grayson, debuted in 1940, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and impatience about the upcoming animated film, Dynamic Duo. The idea of two Robins – Dick Grayson and Jason Todd – teaming up is intriguing, even though they never worked together in their Robin days.

Wow, what a thrill, Batman! It seems the long-awaited Robin animated film, titled “Dynamic Duo,” has finally got a release window from Warner Bros. The catch, however, is that we’ve got to wait until the spring of 2028 (as reported by Collider) to get our hands on it. This exciting news dropped during this year’s LightBox Expo in Pasadena, California. Yet, the question remains unanswered as to whether “Dynamic Duo” will fall within the DC Universe or be categorized as an Elseworlds project. As a film enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement for this tantalizing tease!

At the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation (WBPA) event, Arthur Mintz, director of the upcoming Robin film, was among the panelists. Although the movie isn’t due for another four years, clips from the anticipated “Dynamic Duo” were apparently screened. As reported by Collider, Bill Damaschke, President of WBPA, acted as the event moderator.

Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja (from Bill Hader’s The Cat in the Hat) along with Hamish Grieve and Todd Wilderman from Meet the Flintstones, were part of a panel at LBX’s WBPA event. Earlier this month, James Gunn announced that Dynamic Duo is being developed, and the co-chair/co-CEO of DC Studios shared (via their former platform Twitter):

I’m absolutely thrilled to share that our latest production, DYNAMIC DUO by DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation, has been given the green light for cinemas! The tale revolves around Robin, or should we say Robins – Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. This groundbreaking film is a collaboration between Swaybox, combining animation, puppetry, and CGI, with a script penned by the exceptionally talented Matt Aldrich. We’re working alongside our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho to create something truly extraordinary!

The announcement of Dynamic Duo is both exciting and surprising. While it’s intriguing to team up Dick Grayson’s Robin with Jason Todd’s version of the character, the two Boy Wonders never worked together while both were wearing their famous red, green and yellow costumes. In the DC Comics continuity prior to the Crisis on Infinite Earth (1985-1986), a blonde-haired carbon copy of Dick Grayson, named Jason Todd, took up the mantle of Robin after Grayson moved on from being Batman’s partner.

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, my perspective as a cinema devotee shifted when Jason Todd’s backstory underwent a drastic transformation. This dark-haired boy was a stark contrast to Dick Grayson. Yet, against Grayson’s reservations, Bruce Wayne (Batman) chose to adopt the rebellious orphan, who ultimately became Robin. However, Jason was a fiery, defiant crime fighter, and his impulsive decision to confront the Joker alone in ‘A Death in the Family’ (issues 426-429 of Batman) led to his untimely demise. Interestingly, before his tragic end, Jason had briefly teamed up with Grayson in one issue of a Batman comic.

Actually, the team-up in this instance wasn’t between Robins since Grayson had transitioned into leading the Teen Titans, assuming the role of Nightwing. However, an alliance did occur between Nightwing and the latest Robin in Batman issue #416 (1988), titled “White Gold and Truth.” Their collaboration was primarily focused on dismantling a drug ring, but the narrative’s heart lay in their eventual understanding and friendship that developed. Interestingly, Grayson discovered the true motivation behind Bruce adopting a new partner: it was due to his longing for him.

In this upcoming animated film, we’ll be witnessing encounters between Nightwing and the reborn version of Todd, known as Red Hood. It’s intriguing to consider how the team, often referred to as the “Dynamic Duo,” will handle these characters. While there are suggestions that this could be an “Elseworlds” storyline, it’s important to note that within the DC Universe, we can expect plenty of Robin characters to remain comic-accurate. With Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold” and screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s “Teen Titans” movies on the way, there will be no shortage of faithful Robin portrayals in the DCU.
