As a dedicated fan of supernatural series and someone who’s seen their fair share of demonic possessions and cult-like activities, I can confidently say that Happy Hollow’s otherworldly happenings are as real as the chills running down my spine while watching the show. The experiences of Linda and Chief Danridge are undeniable proof that there’s more to this sleepy town than meets the eye.

During the thrilling Halloween season, the streaming service Peacock debuted the series “Hysteria!“. Instead of weekly episodes, all eight installments were made available at once, allowing viewers to bypass the anticipation for the grand finale. The story unfolds in a small town called Happy Hollow, where the 1980s Satanic panic had gripped the community, causing widespread fear of supernatural and Satanic influences. A heavy metal band lies at the center of this series, gaining prominence following the ritualistic murder of their cherished high school quarterback, Ryan (Brandon Butler).
Little did most residents of Happy Hollow realize, Ryan’s death seemed to be a ritualistic killing, but it was actually an asthma attack he suffered. This charade was put up to hide the real reasons behind his kidnapping along with Faith (Nikki Hahn), and the involvement of Faith’s mother Tracy (Anna Camp) and a man called the Reverend (Garret Dillahunt) in his demise. Despite being based on lies, the fear that spread throughout the town spiraled out of control, leading to severe repercussions.
Despite the enigmatic nature of the final episode, the impact of the town’s collective belief system in Hysteria! should not be underestimated. Consequently, a deeper analysis of the series finale is necessary.
Was Linda Really Possessed by a Demon?
In the last episode of the series, it’s disclosed that Linda (Julie Bowen) wasn’t truly possessed by a demon. Instead, her intense fear of Dylan and a Satanic cult led her to create the entire event herself. After Tracy’s makeshift exorcism, Linda appears to recover. However, just when viewers feel they have figured things out, the show takes another twist and leaves them doubting everything again. In the final scene of the series finale, a demonic figure is seen lurking near Linda’s bedroom door, hinting that her possession might indeed have been genuine and the demon within her still lingers.
Based on Linda’s shared background, it seems plausible that such an incident could occur in her life. In the early stages of her apparent possession, she confides in Father Mathis (Jamie Flanagan) about the long-standing hardships she faced when trying to have a child. Despite countless prayers, she remained childless. Eventually, she pleaded to any entity that would listen, and eventually, her prayers were seemingly answered. Although it’s not explicitly stated, it appears strongly suggested that Dylan was conceived with the aid of something supernatural or demonic, which has now returned as a consequence.
It’s significant to point out that whether Linda’s experience was genuine or self-induced, Father Mathis believed an exorcism was essential due to her condition. He even departed from Happy Hollow and traveled to the Archdiocese in Detroit to present his findings and ask for assistance, though he hasn’t returned yet. If it turns out that Linda was indeed possessed by a demon as suggested in the show’s ending, then it could very well be that other malevolent spirits had influence over Happy Hollow too.
Were the Demonic Forces in Happy Hollow Real or Imagined?
Essentially, the demonic forces in Hysteria are both genuine and figments of people’s imaginations – a paradox that can be attributed to Linda. Once she starts worrying about Dylan possibly belonging to a Satanic cult, everything in Happy Hollow seemingly quakes, with seismic activity happening across the town. However, it was later confirmed by Spud and Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) with the USGS that no such seismic activity occurred in the area. The intense fear Linda held about her past prayers’ responses was so potent that it created these tremors, leaving openings for evil to grow and flourish.
In Happy Hollow, it’s obvious that many supernatural occurrences reflect the residents’ fears. However, the encounters of Linda and especially Chief Danridge demonstrate these forces as genuine. Unlike other characters in the series, viewers get a firsthand look at what Linda and Chief Danridge perceive, making their experiences something we can believe is real. The same applies to Tracy’s visions, but she, being a religious zealot, seems intent on fueling the town’s fear. Her visions are authentic because she desires them to be so, whereas Linda’s visions and possession are real due to their impact on her.
In my perspective, even though I encounter unexplainable experiences and visions like a winged demonic creature, a rash on my neck, and hearing demonic voices frequently, I choose to rely on logic rather than being overpowered by fear. Regardless of whether there’s a Satanic cult in our town or not, as a police officer, it’s my duty to perform the required investigation to find Ryan’s killer. Unlike many others, I refuse to let fear dictate my actions.
It should be noted that none of the teenagers meddling with the ideas and rituals of Satanic cults ever see anything remotely demonic, which should make viewers wonder why. Only the parents succumb to their fears, which suggests it’s unwarranted, or they’re all afraid of the wrong thing. As Spud explained early on in the series, “Whatever is going on here is way bigger than us,” which means no one really knows what’s happening in Happy Hollow. Simply put, the demonic forces are real, but so is the hysteria.
Will There Be a Second Season?
Since no official word has come about a second season, many fans believe the show would greatly profit from one. After all, the final episode left us with more mysteries than solutions. For example, is Linda destined for another possession now that the demon outside her bedroom door remains unchecked? Although she appeared to expel the demon possessing her, it seems only to have retreated temporarily. Additionally, what’s going to transpire regarding Tracy and the Reverend after their arrest for Ryan’s murder? With public support on their side, Chief Danridge may encounter numerous challenges as he carries out his duties.
To elaborate, does Judith’s (Jessica Treska) relocation to Los Angeles serve as a catalyst for her deepening involvement in Satanic cultism? It seems that if anyone had the inclination to lead a cult, it was Judith. Her supposed punishment of living with her father in Los Angeles might just reinforce her unconventional aspirations. With the enigmatic conclusion of Hysteria!, viewers can merely cross their fingers for a subsequent season of the show. At present, all episodes of Hysteria! are accessible on Peacock.
