As a long-time fan of Tim Allen‘s comedic genius, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia as I eagerly await his return to TV screens with “Shifting Gears.” Having starred in two successful sitcoms before this, it’s like watching Tom Brady score another touchdown for the team. Tim Allen’s comparison to the legendary NFL quarterback is spot on, and I can’t help but cheer him on just as enthusiastically.
Tim Allen is gearing up for his comeback on television with his upcoming sitcom titled “Shifting Gears“, which will be his third sitcom following “Home Improvement ” and “Last Man Standing“. Both of the previous series were highly successful, though it’s yet to be seen if the new comedy series will be just as entertaining since its premiere is scheduled for a later date. One can only hope that the program will be enjoyable! Meanwhile, Allen himself appears to be as excited about his small screen comeback as Tom Brady before returning to football, and I share his enthusiasm.
From 1991 to 1999 and then from 2011 to 2021, this Emmy-nominated actor graced our screens on shows like “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing”. However, it appears that this seasoned performer might be considering a brief hiatus from TV acting. But, an exciting new project titled “Shifting Gears” has caught his attention. In an interview with Us Weekly, he drew parallels between his career journey and the legendary NFL quarterback, hinting at what might lie ahead in his professional path.
After pondering over “Last Man Standing”, which ran for an impressive nine seasons, I find myself in a similar position to Tom Brady – ready for more. So, I’m embarking on another project.
Prior to formally retiring from football in 2023, Tom Brady had initially announced his retirement in 2022, but then changed his mind just two months later and returned to the NFL. Tim Allen’s comparison seems quite fitting given this trend of going back to old pursuits. Similarly, it appears that Tim Allen wouldn’t be working on Shifting Gears if he wasn’t confident about himself. I admire his mindset and am happy for the actor, as he seems to be enjoying himself immensely on set. This enjoyment isn’t just due to returning to the Home Improvement set during filming of the pilot, but also because he seems genuinely passionate about the project. As he further explained:
I’m incredibly appreciative for having the opportunity to work and provide entertainment, which is something I truly enjoy. It’s been an exceptional journey. The pilot episode was a hit, leading to the greenlighting of a whole season, and we’ve been filming it for approximately four days so far.
ABC aired “Shifting Gears” as a series last summer, featuring Allen starring as a widower who runs a classic car workshop. His estranged daughter, portrayed by Kat Dennings from other sitcoms, returns with her own child. This setup seems to be reminiscent of a traditional show, promising some humorous moments due to generational gaps, and I’m excited to see how it unfolds.
It’s important to note that Tim Allen isn’t new to television series production since “Last Man Standing.” In fact, he reprised his iconic character Scott Calvin/Santa Claus for “The Santa Clauses,” a show available on Disney+. The second season premiered in 2023, but as of now, there’s no news about a third season. However, Allen has shared ideas for potential episodes. With the upcoming release of “Shifting Gears,” it appears unlikely that we’ll see more of “The Santa Clauses,” although its future is still undecided.
Currently, there’s no confirmed air date for “Shifting Gears”, but I’m eagerly awaiting the chance to watch Tim Allen back in a sitcom. Fingers crossed he continues to follow Tom Brady’s lead and stays active in his career. In the interim, you can enjoy all nine seasons of “Last Man Standing” on Hulu with a subscription, and don’t forget that you can stream “Home Improvement” from start to finish on Disney+ too.
