As a long-time admirer of Gérard Depardieu, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent developments in his life. The man who brought us unforgettable characters like Cyrano de Bergerac and Dangereux in Green Card is now facing multiple sexual assault allegations.
Actor Gerard Depardieu, famed for his French films, has decided to skip his upcoming trial in Paris this week regarding sexual assault allegations. He’s asked for the proceedings to be delayed due to health issues.
Depardieu was due to attend court for a trial beginning in Paris on Monday. Two women have accused the actor, known for his roles in ‘Green Card’ and ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’, of sexual assault, allegedly connected to incidents on the set of the movie ‘The Green Shutters’ in 2021.
On Monday, Jeremie Assous, Depardieu’s attorney, stated that his client had been advised by medical professionals to avoid attending the court hearing due to health concerns. Assous emphasized that Depardieu is 75 years old and has been diabetic for a quarter of a century. Furthermore, he requested a delay in the trial proceedings.
Gérard Depardieu regrets that he cannot attend the hearing due to medical reasons, and therefore he will ask for a postponement until a later time when he can be in attendance. In an interview with RTL France, Assous stated this, also mentioning that Depardieu wishes to speak about the case details. It’s important to note that Depardieu has denied all allegations against him.
As a strong advocate for equal justice, I firmly believe that no individual, including Mr. Depardieu as an artist, should receive preferential treatment over others. This was my stance, conveyed to Agence France-Presse, during our discussions regarding the case.
The “Green Shutters” case marks the initial court hearing for numerous sexual misconduct accusations against Depardieu, attracting intense interest as it represents the most prominent #MeToo-like trial in France involving a prominent figure from the entertainment industry.
Actress Charlotte Arnould from France has recently made accusations against Gérard Depardieu, claiming two instances of rape that allegedly occurred in 2018. These charges are currently being addressed by the legal system. Last year, French investigative news platform Médiapart reported extensive accounts from 13 women who accused Depardieu of inappropriate sexual behavior. Additionally, a television investigation on the show Complément d’Enquête brought to light additional incidents spanning several years.
Depardieu has consistently claimed his innocence, publishing a public letter in the conservative Le Figaro newspaper explaining that his actions were misunderstood.
