As a gamer with a soft spot for pop culture and a knack for appreciating creative genius, I must say that Janelle Monáe continues to astound me with her transformative artistry. The way she brings iconic characters like E.T. to life through immersive storytelling is nothing short of extraordinary. Her dedication to turning her heart’s desires into reality is truly inspiring, making me wonder if I should start planning my own cosplay for the next gaming convention!
Janelle Monáe usually plans her Halloween costumes two years ahead, but when the Screen Actors Guild went on strike last year, she decided to abandon her spooky plans. “SAG-AFTRA released guidelines advising against dressing up as characters from films or TV shows, so I chose to support my fellow actors and change my plan,” the 38-year-old multi-talented artist explained to The Hollywood Reporter recently.
Last season, Monáe didn’t completely let go of her desired iconic movie character, instead keeping it a secret. However, on Wednesday, with just hours to spare before Halloween, she revealed an extraordinary metamorphosis into the cherished title character from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Apart from posting her Instagram content featuring E.T., which included videos, a series of photos, and a glimpse into an ordinary day (including eating breakfast, getting dressed in both men’s and women’s clothing, and flying on a bike labeled “Janelllliot”) for her five million followers, Monáe made her television debut on The Jennifer Hudson Show.

It’s noteworthy that in one image, E.T. is sporting a Kamala Harris 2024 campaign pin as a show of political support, with the November 5th election fast approaching. In the past, Monáe took on the role of the fly that landed on Mike Pence’s head during a televised debate, using this opportunity to urge people to vote in the run-up to the 2020 elections and to dissuade voters from backing Pence and his vice presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, as reported by THR.
For the past five years, I’ve been captivated by Monáe’s meticulously crafted Halloween transformations, and it’s become clear that she’s not merely donning an outfit for a night out. Instead, she collaborates with stylists, special effects artists, makeup artists, creative directors, videographers, and more to bring her vision to life, a process that frequently takes five hours or more in the makeup chair. This dedication doesn’t stop at the physical transformation; she also invests her creativity in crafting intricate backstories for each character, often immersing herself fully, or going ‘method’, during the creative process.
She shared with THR that Halloween holds a special, joyful place in her heart, a feeling that’s been there since she was young. This discussion opens up to a broader question: how can we be sources of joy, happiness, and creativity? I’m simply trying to encourage more of these feelings. Providing Halloween experiences and creative outlets is not laborious, but fulfilling – it’s work that touches my heart. I do this because it’s something my heart yearns for.
Did you know? Janelle Monáe collaborated with creative photographer Pol Korucz to portray E.T., as seen in her recent cover story for The Hollywood Reporter. In this intriguing feature, published last week, Monáe was depicted as a unique monster reminiscent of legendary screen antagonists such as Frankenstein or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On Instagram, Korucz expressed his gratitude, saying, “A billion times thank you for making my childhood dream come true, Janelle Monae.
