As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent building virtual Lego cities and battling imaginary enemies, I must say, this news has me bricking with excitement! The collaboration between Universal Pictures and the Lego Group for three live-action films is a dream come true.
Universal Pictures and LEGO Group are teaming up to produce three live-action films, focusing around the popular line of buildable toys.
Three distinguished directors, Jake Kasdan from “Red One”, Patty Jenkins of “Wonder Woman” fame, and Joe Cornish, known for “Attack the Block”, are each individually working on separate Lego movies. At this stage, no titles or plot summaries have been disclosed for these upcoming projects.
Kasdan’s feature is now scripted by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (from “The D Train”), following a previous draft penned by Matt Rider and Kevin Burrows (“The Pickup”). Producers for this project include the Lego Group’s Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians, as well as Kasdan and Melvin Mar from Detective Agency.
In the director’s chair for the movie they jointly scripted with Geoff Johns (Wonder Woman 1984), Jenkins is also a producer for Wicked Pictures, working alongside Wilfert and Christians.
Cornish is revising the screenplay for his movie, as it was initially penned by Heather Anne Campbell based on a treatment originally written by Simon Rich. Wilfert and Christians are responsible for its production.
Matt Reilly, Universal’s executive vice president of production development, along with Jacqueline Garell, the director of production development, are responsible for managing the film projects at the studio.
The Lego brand has enjoyed past success, particularly with movies like “The Lego Movie” (2014), which was then followed by others such as “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie”. Currently, Focus Features has teamed up with the Lego Group for “Piece by Piece”, a biopic about Pharrell Williams that uses Lego animation and is now showing in cinemas.
The Lego Group is managed by WME, while Kasdan, Sloss Eckhouse, Jenkins, and Cornish are each represented by different talent agencies: Kasdan and Sloss Eckhouse are under WME, Jenkins by CAA and Gang Tyre, and Cornish by CAA, Independent Talent, and the Davis Law Group.
Deadline first reported the news about the three films being developed.
