As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the cinematic evolution of some of Hollywood’s most iconic franchises, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Ridley Scott returning to the Alien universe yet again! The thought of another installment in this terrifying saga, particularly one focusing on Michael Fassbender’s enigmatic android David, is a tantalizing proposition that has me eagerly anticipating the chilling encounters with the Xenomorphs that lie ahead.
In the world of Hollywood, sequels are unstoppable, particularly in the legendary Alien series, which has produced a total of seven films (eleven if you count the Alien/Predator crossovers) since its debut in 1979. It seems that more is on the horizon, as the creator of Alien and an Oscar-nominated director are said to be preparing to rejoin the franchise and direct another installment.
According to a recent report by THR, it appears that Ridley Scott is planning to develop a new Alien movie for studio 20th Century following the success of Romulus. Additionally, Joe Penhall is writing a Battle of Britain film, and a thriller titled Bomb, previously announced, is also in the works under the guidance of Kevin McMullin.
It’s plausible that when Scott mentions his involvement in another Alien movie, he could be referring to the upcoming sequel, Alien: Romulus, rather than a continuation of the Prometheus and Alien: Covenant trilogy. The anticipation builds as the thought of Scott returning to develop Michael Fassbender’s character, David, and enriching the Alien mythos is indeed enticing, despite some criticisms towards Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
An Alien: Romulus Sequel Is Now in the Works
During an interview, Scott expressed his disappointment about not having control over the Alien franchise, similar to how Spielberg managed Jurassic Park and James Cameron his own projects. However, Justin Alvarado Brown, president and COO of Scott Free, assured that Ridley Scott will be part of any movies related to his legacy titles, stating it would be illogical to create a film without him. This includes the upcoming sequel to this year’s prequel Alien: Romulus, which introduced audiences to a new group of struggling space colonists who encounter the terrifying alien while scavenging an abandoned spaceship. The development for the Romulus sequel is currently underway, with Steve Asbell from 20th Century Studios hinting that Fede Álvarez may return as director.
Currently, we are brainstorming an idea for a sequel. While our contract with director Fede Álvarez isn’t finalized yet, it will be soon, and he has a concept that we’re excited about. The characters Rain and Andy, portrayed by Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson, were standout performers in the original film. As I envision their future, I often find myself wondering, “Where should these characters go next?” We can guarantee there will be aliens and terrifying horror scenes, but my personal preference is to delve deeper into the story of these two captivating individuals.
Moving on to Ridley Scott’s upcoming projects, the director will revisit the Roman Empire, continuing the tale of the Gladiator saga. The sequel, titled “Gladiator 2”, takes place years after the initial gladiatorial drama, with Lucius being compelled to fight in the Colosseum following Rome’s conquest of his homeland. After a gap of over two decades, audiences won’t have long to wait for “Gladiator 3”, which is currently under development.
