Cristin Milioti Reveals Her Two Favorite Sofia Scenes in ‘The Penguin’

As a die-hard fan of gripping dramas and a lifelong Batman enthusiast, I must say that Cristin Milioti‘s portrayal of Sofia Falcone in The Penguin has been nothing short of exhilarating. Her performance is so captivating that it makes me forget I’m watching an actress on my screen and not the character herself.

As a gamer, I’ve been blown away by Cristin Milioti’s stunning performance in HBO’s The Penguin, where she brings Sofia Falcone, the intense crime family heiress, to life. It’s hard to pinpoint just one standout scene from this series, but the actress herself has revealed her top two favorites from the initial seven episodes.

Milioti confesses to The Hollywood Reporter that watching herself can be unbearable. She explains that many actors share this sentiment, but there are certain scenes she performed that she adored doing and later watched with satisfaction, feeling the portrayal accurately reflected her feelings – a sensation that doesn’t always happen.

The scene in question is when Sofia participated in her family’s final meal – unbeknownst to her victims at that point. She described it as “the conversation during dinner with my family, and what followed,” stating that the entire sequence from the moment she entered the dining room until the end of the episode was incredibly exciting.

The second act unfolded during Sunday evening’s seventh episode, where we find Sofia paying a visit to the solitary potential witness to her family’s brutal crimes, a young girl now residing in an orphanage. Here, Sofia voices her belief that her family got what they deserved and intimidates the child into silence. It isn’t until later that she recognizes her own actions mirror those of her detested father.

Milioti recalls reading that particular scene and exclaiming, “Wow, that’s intense!” She was thrilled by it and deeply affected; it’s a complex scene. Yet, it’s exactly what her character would do. What makes this scene powerful, too, is that she’s trying to destroy her father’s legacy symbolically, saying, “I’m nothing like him, he’s a monster.” However, she inflicts the same suffering on a young girl. She believes she’s helping the child by saving them from something unknown, but in reality, she’s damaging their life. In her mind, she thinks she’s doing the right thing.

Earlier, Milioti opened up to THR about securing the role and her journey transforming into a menacing mobster. “I’ve long harbored a desire to play someone like this,” she shared. “As a kid who grew up loving Batman, I’ve always dreamed of embodying a villain in the Batman universe. In fact, I used to act out being Batman villains in my backyard as a child. So, when this opportunity presented itself, it resonated with me on a deep level. After signing on and reading more scripts, I was astounded that I would get to bring this character to life. It was an incredibly moving experience. She is one of my favorite roles I’ve ever played.
