Vicky Donor director Shoojit Sircar reveals an ‘A-lister’ laughed off Ayushmann Khurrana starrer’s script, shares Om Puri's reaction: 'Bollywood main tum yeh karoge?'

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cinema and its behind-the-scenes tales, I find myself captivated by the intriguing journey of Vicky Donor. Shoojit Sircar’s ability to bring an unconventional subject like sperm donation to the forefront of mainstream Bollywood is commendable, especially when faced with initial skepticism and rejection from A-listers.

Vicky Donor, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam, is one of Shoojit Sircar’s groundbreaking films. The movie, which tackles an unusual theme like sperm donation, was initially rejected by a big-name actor, as the filmmaker disclosed more recently. Even Om Puri had expressed doubts about his concept.

During a recent chat with Samdish Bhatia, Shoojit Sircar discussed the casting of Ayushmann Khurrana in the movie. He disclosed, “I initially approached an established actor with the film, but I won’t mention names as it’s unprofessional to do so. He chuckled and declined, stating that it’s too mainstream. In truth, I approached another actor and received the same response.” He went on to say that he ultimately decided to move forward because he doesn’t feel comfortable with those types of responses.

Later on, Sircar was reminded that a casting director friend of his from Delhi (let’s call him Jogi) suggested introducing him to a fresh talent. As it turns out, the filmmaker hadn’t watched Roadies before and wasn’t familiar with Khurrana at that time.

Initially, he found himself fond of him during their first encounter, and even the actor from Dream Girl 2 requested to bring the script home for reading. He stated that they were seeking an individual skilled in improvisation and familiar with Delhi dialect, which he possessed.

In the very same chat, Shoojit additionally remembered that he had once pondered over offering the part to Om Puri which ultimately went to Annu Kapoor. Strolling along the path of reminiscence, he also shared his first encounter with the esteemed actor, mentioning that by then, Om Puri was already a shining star.

Sircar found out that the seasoned actor was dealing with some private troubles at the time. Consequently, he harbored reservations about whether Puri would be able to commit a significant amount of time to the script, given his intuition that this might already be an issue during their initial encounter.

I encountered him once more, and he shared, ‘The script’s all good, but in Bollywood, you’ll be the one to execute it.’ During filming times, this would pose an issue for me, as he seemed uneasy discussing the topic.

Later on, I found myself reminiscing about Annu Kapoor, whose passion and exhilaration over his portrayal in the movie simply blew me away. I couldn’t help but praise his acting skills, proclaiming it as a sort of “second chance” or “second innings” for him – a fresh opportunity to shine even brighter!
