As a nostalgic spectator of the golden era of Bollywood, I can’t help but feel a pang of excitement at the prospect of seeing Meenakshi Seshadri grace the silver screen once more. Her life experience, spanning from the 80s and 90s, is a testament to an era where stars shone brighter than the marquee lights themselves. I remember her performances with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, and Sunny Deol, and I can’t help but feel that the industry has been missing her charm.
Meenakshi Seshadri, a versatile Indian artist known for acting, dancing, and performing, became an instant celebrity following her role in the second movie “Hero.” During the 80s and 90s, she was a well-recognized figure who often collaborated with prominent actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, and Shatrughan Sinha. Additionally, she appeared in the 1987 film “Dacait” alongside Sunny Deol. Although her performances garnered favorable reviews, the actress recently disclosed that she didn’t receive a fair compensation for her work.
During a conversation with Friday Talkies, Meenakshi Seshadri reminisced about the past, sharing that director Rahul Rawail had moved her to tears when he cast her alongside Sunny Deol in Dacait. She explained to the publication that her joy knew no bounds as he was known for making films like Betaab, Arjun, and Love Story, which she admired greatly.
In conversation about her part in the action movie, Rahul made it clear that the lead actor from Gadar will have a significant role, and his family would carry more weight in the film. He also mentioned that she’d get approximately 5-6 significant scenes and 2-3 songs. However, she reassured him that he didn’t need to persuade her because she was already committed to collaborating with him on the project.
In response, she playfully added that Rawail left her in tears at the signing due to him not giving her the payment she desired. She reminisced about the director saying, “I won’t pay you what you ask for. You are working with me – that is your compensation. Accept whatever I give graciously.” As a devotee of his craft, she smiled through her tears and consented to whatever was being presented to her.
Although Meenakshi had a thriving acting career in both Bollywood and Southern cinema, she chose to step away from the film industry back in 1996 to devote her attention to her personal life. She eventually moved to the USA. However, in 2016, she made a rare exception for the movie Ghayal: Once Again, directed by Sunny Deol. Now, following a 27-year hiatus from public life, this esteemed actress is planning a return to the industry.
Wouldn’t it be exciting to watch the seasoned starlet make a comeback on the silver screen, displaying her elegance, captivating persona, and unparalleled talent in acting?
