As a fan who’s been following Superman & Lois since its inception, I must say that this week’s episode, “When the Lights Come On,” was nothing short of exhilarating! The long-awaited showdown between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor finally happened, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
Warning: SPOILERS for the Superman & Lois episode “When the Lights Come On” are ahead!
Recently, I expressed my hope to witness Clark Kent and Lex Luthor engage in a physical confrontation before the show “Superman & Lois” concluded this season, as it seemed Luthor was using Doomsday and his minions instead. To my surprise, this wish came true earlier than anticipated! The episode titled “When the Lights Come On”, due to air on the 2024 TV schedule, featured a fierce battle between Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark Kent and Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor, made possible by an evenly balanced situation. This confrontation ultimately led to Inde Navarrette’s character, Sarah Cortez, leaving the series.
Clark And Luthor Duked It Out In Downtown Smallville
Since Luthor persisted in seeking vengeance against Lois Lane, his daughter Elizabeth (portrayed by actress Elizabeth Henstridge from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) firmly told him to keep away from her life permanently, fearing that their upcoming son would be exposed to such malice. In the opening scenes of “When the Lights Come On,” we witness Luthor struggling deeply with losing Elizabeth once more, manifested through his destructive behavior in his hotel room, including burning pictures and documents he had gathered to find her. However, upon Amanda McCoy’s return, Luthor managed to regain composure and gave her fresh instructions, one of which was to have a scientist under his employ named Milton quickly build designs for an unidentified device.
In this storyline, Lex Luthor’s plans to set up LexCorp’s new base in Smallville (which many believe is a scheme to annoy Lois) have faced obstacles due to Mayor Lana Lang and bureaucratic red tape. This episode saw Luthor seemingly making progress by offering $5 million to resident Aidy Manning for her land. Yet, she reconsidered her decision, partly influenced by the convincing arguments of both Lana and Clark. The latter’s words carried significant weight as Aidy, like several Smallville residents, has discovered that Clark is Superman. In a last-ditch effort, Luthor increased his offer to $10 million not just for Aidy but for everyone in the bar where she was due to sign the papers. However, other Smallville residents rallied Aidy not to give in, as they were aware that whatever Luthor’s intentions might be, they wouldn’t benefit the community.
Disturbed by Lana Lang meddling in his affairs, Luthor decided to take matters into his own hands. He disarmed her home security system and instructed his henchman, Otis Grisham, to ignite the gas inside her house with the intent to harm or even kill her. However, luckily for Lana, she awoke due to an unpleasant smell and managed to turn off the stove. This act of violence was interrupted by Otis, who attempted to complete his mission personally. Fortunately, Sarah intervened, using a baseball bat to strike Otis over the head and halt his actions. Enraged at how close Lana came to meeting a tragic end, Clark confronted Luthor in broad daylight in Smallville’s town center, demanding that he put an end to their feud once and for all.
In a surprising twist, Luthor had a cunning plan hidden: he made Milton modify the street lights in the area to mimic red sun energy, draining Clark Kent of his superpowers. This led to a physical confrontation between the two men in the pouring rain, leaving them both injured. Eventually, Clark prevailed and ordered Luthor to leave Smallville forever. Upon returning to Metropolis, Amanda McCoy expressed her backing for him and suggested he was incorrectly trying to subdue Superman; instead, he needed a powerful suit – a hint that the series Superman & Lois will feature Luthor’s iconic warsuit!
Sarah’s Leaving Smallville To Study Abroad
If you’ve kept up with the show Superman & Lois since its debut (and for those who might need a refresher, the initial three seasons are available on Max), you’re aware that Sarah Cortez has faced significant challenges, including attempting suicide before the series began and being arrested for DUI in Season 3. Recently, aside from notable occasions such as her father’s near-wedding to Chrissy Beppo, Sarah’s life has mainly involved work at the diner and sleeping. She yearns for freedom and a new beginning, and although she can’t jet off to any destination like Jonathan and Jordan, in “When the Lights Come On,” she confided in her mom about her desire to study abroad for her junior year of high school.
At first, Lana hesitated if this was the appropriate choice for her daughter, but following the encounter with Otis, she came to believe that Sarah should attend university overseas. This wasn’t merely to keep her distant from Lex Luthor’s schemes, but because Sarah deserved an opportunity to explore different parts of the world.
It’s uncertain whether Sarah will reappear in “Superman & Lois” before its conclusion, but given that Inde Navarrette has only agreed to appear in three episodes during Season 4, it seems likely that the episode titled “When the Lights Come On” marks her final appearance. I hope this isn’t true, as I would like Sarah to have a chance to bid farewell to Erik Valdez’s character, Kyle Cushing, before she departs for her studies abroad. However, if “When the Lights Come On” does turn out to be Sarah’s last appearance, at least we can take comfort in knowing that she is off to pursue great things.
There are only four more episodes of Superman & Lois remaining, so don’t forget to catch them every Monday at 8 pm ET on The CW. Afterward, head over to TopMob for our analysis on the recent events.
