As a longtime fan of animated series and a keen observer of the industry’s evolution, I find it fascinating to see how Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is strategically adapting to the changing landscape of content creation. The acquisition of “Dino Ranch: Island Explorers” underlines a shift towards more cost-conscious and collaborative production methods, which is a trend that I believe we’ll see more of in the coming years.
In my gaming world, as the golden age of American TV production seems to be winding down post-Peak TV, Warner Bros. Discovery is making a strategic move by diving deeper into international content. They’ve struck a deal to grab the rights for an animated spin-off, titled Dino Ranch: Island Explorers – a spin-off of the popular Canadian preschool series Dino Ranch – for broadcast in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It’s all about expanding our horizons, my friends!
In light of its struggles during the shift towards the streaming era, which involved content disputes and cost reductions (referred to as “write-offs” and “cost-cutting”), the company is focusing on a well-known series called Dino Ranch. Previous seasons of this show were broadcasted on Disney Junior and Disney+ in the American market.
The agreement for “Dino Ranch: Island Explorers” signifies a trend within the industry of shifting from global rights deals to assembling funding through traditional international co-production collaborations instead. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has opted to acquire the spin-off animated series, initially set to air on their Cartoonito preschool network in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), following a 2026 launch.
Zia Sands, head of content acquisitions, partnerships, and coproductions at WBC Kids in EMEA, expressed in a statement: “Cartoonito offers a secure and reliable environment for preschoolers and their families to interact with their favorite characters, enjoy captivating stories, and embark on thrilling new journeys. The spin-off series of ‘Dino Ranch’ aligns perfectly with the values and preferences of our preschool audience, and we are thrilled to collaborate with Boat Rocker on what promises to be a top-quality production that will captivate and amuse our Cartoonito viewers.
In addition to other platforms, the newly-created children’s show called “Dino Ranch: Island Explorers” will be broadcast on CBC in Canada as well. This captivating series is brought to life by Matt Fernandes of Industrial Brothers and jointly produced with Boat Rocker.
The Cassidy family’s animated show finds them swapping cowboy attire for explorer gear as they journey to the enigmatic and vibrant Dino Island. Their uncle, Jack Cassidy, resides on this island teeming with newly discovered dinosaur species, colossal insects, and ancient amphibians. The trio consisting of Jon, Min, Miguel, along with their loyal dinosaur companions, will delve into the island’s dense dinosaur-inhabited jungle, an active volcano, and the hidden underwater world that lies beneath – as described by the producers.
Other forthcoming Boat Rocker series include “Bet” for Netflix, as well as the recently unveiled international collaborative productions such as “Video Nasty” for BBC3 and WDR, and “Mix Tape” for Foxtel’s streaming service, Binge.
