Star Wars Outlaws: Can New Creative Director Save the Game?

Star Wars Outlaws: Can New Creative Director Save the Game?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen quite a few titles that started off rocky but eventually found their footing. The latest addition to this list is the much-anticipated Star Wars Outlaws. While its launch was met with disappointing numbers and criticisms, it seems like the devs at Massive Entertainment are determined to turn things around by hiring Drew Rechner as Creative Director.

There’s been considerable excitement about the debut of “Star Wars Outlaws“, but unfortunately, its launch didn’t meet expectations, and some critics are labeling it as a “triumphant failure” among top-tier games.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for “Outlaws” instead of seeing it forgotten like Concord. It seems that the talented team at Massive Entertainment is doing their best to revive the game, and they’ve just taken a significant step by bringing on board a new creative director, none other than Drew Rechner.

Drew Rechner Hired as Creative Director for Star Wars Outlaws

In a recent update from Ubisoft, developers discuss the initial response of their game and their approach towards addressing player comments. Furthermore, they have outlined three main areas they are focusing on to enhance the gameplay experience: refining combat, stealth mechanics, and control systems. Here’s what they shared:

“The first key area of improvement to the game is combat where we see a real opportunity to add more depth and excitement to the experience, further rewarding your tactics and precision. Our second key area is stealth which is not only about improving the readability and consistency of enemy detection, but also providing choice in how you want to approach each encounter. Finally, our third key area of focus is centered around the character controls, which means improving the reliability of cover, increasing the responsiveness of climbing and crouching, and generally improving the consistency of the controls overall.”

Further details will be shared later, but it’s anticipated that the most significant upgrade for the game will release on November 21st.

Initial Problems with Outlaws

Upon its debut, Outlaws garnered acclaim for its striking graphics, yet it encountered numerous issues at launch, plagued by bugs. Furthermore, numerous gamers voiced dissatisfaction over the repetitiveness of missions outside the primary storyline and the limited options available for interacting with the galaxy.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed about Ubisoft’s grand vision for the expansive world of Outlaws. Given their anticipation that the game would maintain an impressive player base for years to come, it appears that the number of players has fallen short of what they had hoped, leaving me wondering if the game’s price truly reflects its value.

Can Outlaws be Salvaged at All?

It’s quite possible that the game “Outlaws” could eventually recover in the future, similar to other games that had rocky launches but managed to increase their player base over several years. Games like “Cyberpunk 2077”, “No Man’s Sky”, and even “Star Wars Battlefront II” are good examples of this trend. If we take a look at another “Star Wars” title, “Star Wars Battlefront II” bounced back from its initial poor reception by introducing various playable characters and DLC in the months following its release.

Regarding the game “Outlaws”, it boasts a significant advantage being linked to the “Star Wars” universe, providing numerous chances for the game to leverage the brand’s synergy as new series such as “Skeleton Crew” are released and upcoming movies like “The Mandalorian” film hit the screens.

Absolutely, it’s not a promise that the game Outlaws can climb out of its predicament, but at least Ubisoft is signaling that they’re still committed to the game for now.

Star Wars Outlaws is now playable for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
