Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Lands New April 2025 Release Date

As a die-hard movie fan with a knack for predicting box office trends, this latest shift in release dates for Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” and the upcoming sci-fi drama “Companion” has me intrigued! It seems like the big studios are recognizing the power of premium large-format screens, a trend I’ve been advocating for years.

Oscar-winning Parasite director Bong Joon Ho‘s Mickey 17 is on the move again.

Warner Bros. has decided to delay the release of the film Mickey 17 from January 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025. The movie will be shown in Imax theaters around the world.

News broke the day after Lionsgate announced that they were delaying the release of their Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” initially scheduled for April 18, 2023, to October 3, 2025. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua. Given the significant role premium large-format screens play in a movie’s success, they are highly sought after. Moreover, the release of “Mickey 17” will now enjoy a theatrical gap in some markets.

As soon as April 18th opened up, we swiftly arranged to book it for ‘Mickey 17’. We’re overjoyed about the new date and can’t wait for the movie to be shown to audiences in IMAX,” the studio representative stated in a release.

Robert Pattinson is playing the lead role in the screen adaptation of Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel titled “Mickey 7”. In this book, Mickey 7 is a space colonist who is considered disposable or “expendable”, being the seventh reincarnation of a man named Mickey Barnes. Each colony has an expendable, a crew member that takes on dangerous tasks, but when they perish, their bodies are replaced through cloning. Ashton released the sequel to this novel, titled “Antimatter Blues”, last year.

The director, Bong, is anticipated to add his unique style to the original content. The movie will feature Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo as its stars. Production is being handled by Plan B Entertainment, along with Dooho Choi from Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong himself through his Offscreen, Inc. banner.

In a coordinated decision, New Line and Warner Bros. have decided to delay the release of Companion from January 10, 2025, to January 31, 2025. The reason for this shift is to ensure global access to Imax screens.
