Arcane Showrunner Christian Linke Explains The Tough Choice To End The Show After Two Seasons, And Honestly, I Totally Understand

As a long-time fan of both TV shows and video games, I find myself at a crossroads with the announcement of Arcane Season 2 being the final chapter. Initially, I was disheartened by this news, much like a kid who’s just been told they can only have one scoop of ice cream on their birthday. However, after hearing the reasoning from co-creator Christian Linke, my respect for the creative team has grown immensely.

For me, “Arcane” stands out as the premier choice among Netflix’s binge-worthy shows. By the conclusion of its first season, it seemed like the series could continue indefinitely. Unfortunately, Season 2 was announced as the concluding part of the series, leaving many fans disheartened. Nevertheless, series co-creator and showrunner Christian Linke recently spoke to TopMob, providing an explanation for the decision to conclude the series, and I now find myself fully comprehending their rationale.

Before the debut of Arcane Season 2, I got a chance to sit down with Christian Linke for a chat. He and co-creator Alex Ye shared why they decided to wrap up the series so quickly. Linke was candid, expressing that while they could have continued the story, they didn’t want to emulate those TV shows that keep going long after their peak. They wanted to create something fresh and impactful, not just run the narrative into the ground.

From the beginning, we had a clear vision for our story. Admittedly, it could have been expanded, but for us, it felt right to stick with the original plan. Personally, as creators, we’ve noticed that maintaining inspiration over an extended period can be challenging when dealing with similar themes. For us, this narrative has been in development for nine years, and we feel a sense of responsibility to stay true to our initial concept.

I fully grasp this reasoning, and it significantly boosts my admiration for the creative team’s choices. As a devoted TV enthusiast, I can easily list numerous shows that overstayed their welcome. For instance, there’s “The Walking Dead” with its eleven seasons, and the nine-season mockumentary series, “The Office,” which began to lose its charm as fresh characters were introduced each year.

Arcane is a widely recognized video game adaptation based on League of Legends, which made its debut on Netflix in November 2021. This series narrates the story of two sisters, Vi and Jinx, and their adventures within the technologically advanced and volatile city of Piltover. The show held the number one spot on the streaming platform for extended periods and secured a renewal for Season 2 almost immediately. However, this news is bittersweet now, as these upcoming episodes will mark the conclusion of the series.

Indeed, nothing could be more disheartening, not merely for a dedicated fan but also for any ardent television enthusiast, than witnessing a remake of “LoL” face the same destiny as numerous shows that preceded it. Christian Linke further expressed that it would be unwise and reckless to prolong the narrative solely to maintain the series’ longevity.

Here’s the narrative we’ve been imagining, but we don’t wish to exaggerate or overcomplicate it, as it may lose its authenticity and essence. Maintaining balance seems crucial for us.

Based on what was said earlier by the veteran at Riot Games, creating a CGI series required a considerable amount of time. If the narrative has been their long-held intention, I’m more than happy to accept it.

Although I feel disappointed right now, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the final chapter. Christian Linke mentioned in his post on the series’ X platform (or Twitter) that Vi and Jinx’s tale has come to an end, but he’s eager to explore other League of Legends characters next. In his words, this show was merely a starting point for small-screen storytelling within this franchise, hinting at more tales yet to be told.

I can’t wait to discover more characters in this world, but for now, I’ll enjoy our current series to the fullest and later watch shows similar to “Arcane” to fill the void it will leave.

Don’t forget to watch the premiere of Arcane Season 2, which consists of three episodes, starting on November 9. The remaining two episodes will follow on November 16 and November 23. You can stream all episodes if you have a Netflix subscription.
