As a frequent visitor to both Disneyland and Disney World, I can wholeheartedly say that there’s nothing quite like the enchantment these magical lands weave around you. However, as someone who has witnessed the behind-the-scenes operations, I must admit that the idea of having one’s ashes scattered within the parks is a bit more complicated than it seems.
Frequently finding myself at Disneyland and Disney World, I can’t help but feel reluctant to ever depart, no matter how many times I visit. Several individuals in my situation have pondered the idea of making a Disney theme park their permanent home by attempting to scatter their ashes within the parks, and it appears that Ariana Grande’s mother is among those who are genuinely determined to make this dream come true.
In a recent conversation on the Ive…Been Through podcast, the soon-to-be Glinda in the upcoming “Wicked” movie discussed Walt Disney World. Given her frequent visits to the resort along with her family, she shared an interesting personal detail: her mother has expressed a heartfelt wish for her ashes to be scattered over Cinderella Castle. This topic seems to have been brought up more than once in their conversations.
My mom frequently mentions that she wants her ashes scattered at Cinderella’s Castle. And I respond, “Mom, it’s Christmas; can we not discuss this now?” To which she replies, “Yes, you need to ensure that it gets done.” However, I don’t want to be the one who ensures that happens.
I get why Ariana Grande’s mom feels that way, and I can see Ariana’s perspective too. After all, attempting to scatter ashes within a Disney park isn’t an easy decision due to the strict policies Disney has in place against such actions. They truly don’t tolerate it.
Many individuals express a desire to have their cremated remains scattered within a Disney park, with the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean’s water being preferred destinations for obvious reasons. It has been rumored that remnants have even been left at Rise of the Resistance. This occurrence is frequent enough that it has earned a name: HEPA cleanup. This is because the cleaning staff requires a specialized vacuum with a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter to remove the debris.
Dispersing someone’s remains in such a manner is hazardous, which means it’s against the rules at Disney Parks. Although it can be difficult to prevent this from happening, it often leads to extensive cleaning operations and even temporary closures of popular attractions for biohazard removal. No one wants their beloved Disney World attractions shut down due to a cleanup related to hazardous waste.
Even if we remove the hassle and difficulty that doing this causes for other people, there’s the fact that following the massive cleanup, the mashes won’t even be in the place where the deceased person wanted them. They’ll be disposed of or destroyed in a way that will be far less magical.
It seems Ariana Grande may not abide by her mother’s desires, which could turn out positively. To be honest, if she attempted to honor those wishes at Disney World, she might face a ban – something that, given her fondness for the parks, would arguably be the most unfavorable outcome.
