Law And Order's Latest Guest Is Most Famous For Stranger Things, But I Can't Believe How Many Time's She Appeared In Dick Wolf's Franchise

As a fan with a penchant for spotting familiar faces across different shows and franchises, I must say that Cara Buono’s versatility is nothing short of remarkable! With her impressive six-character repertoire spanning three Law & Order series over three decades, she has solidified herself as a true stalwart of the Dick Wolf universe. It’s like playing hide and seek with a chameleon – spotting her in one role only to find her in another is an exhilarating experience!

Warning: spoilers are ahead for Episode 6 of Law & Order Season 24, called “Time Will Tell.”

In its Season 24 run, the TV series Law & Order consistently featured guest stars who are renowned from other ventures, and actress Cara Buono, famously known for her role in Stranger Things, portrayed a potentially murderous mom. Having recently joined Season 24, Buono’s appearance came mere days after the episode titles for Stranger Things Season 5 were unveiled, slated to air in the 2025 TV premiere lineup. As I delved into Buono’s extensive acting history, it came as a shock to find that she has played six distinct characters across Dick Wolf’s Law & Order franchise over the past three decades.

In the new season of “Law & Order” set to air in 2024, Cara Buono portrayed Lisa Dumont, a mother whose anxious teenage daughter allegedly killed the dean of an elite school. Although Nolan and others believed she was shielding her daughter by taking the blame, there was no evidence to prove that Lisa lied under oath about the incident.

In essence, it took me a moment to identify Cara Buono as Lisa Dumont due to my familiarity with her ’80s style in my Netflix shows. However, she demonstrates she can convincingly portray a protective mother without relying on a Demogorgon or secretive government agents. Beyond Lisa, she has played numerous characters in the Law & Order series, as evidenced by her extensive Dick Wolf credits.

  • Law & Order Season 6 – Shelly Taggert (1996)
  • Law & Order Season 9 – Alice Simonelli (1998)
  • Law & Order: Criminal Intent Season 1 – Charlotte Fielding (2002)
  • Law & Order Season 17 – Attorney Shannon (2007)
  • Law & Order: SVU Season 9 – Rachel Zelinsky (2008)
  • Law & Order Season 24 – Lisa Dumont (2024)

Over the course of its long-running history, similar to Law & Order, and encompassing numerous shows, there are quite a few actors who have portrayed multiple characters. It’s rather unusual for someone to play six distinct roles across three different shows between 1996 and 2024! While it’s not exactly like the recent episode bringing back an actor from Law & Order: SVU who met his demise in 2009, it was surprising to notice that Katee Sackhoff, as a Season 24 guest star, had previously worked on Law & Order productions.

It’s yet uncertain whether the actress will accumulate another credit for a Law & Order franchise in her portfolio, but it would surely be exciting if she appeared on Law & Order: Organized Crime during its fifth season, thereby completing a trio of shows. This show is set to return on streaming platforms like Peacock, having been relocated from NBC.

It’s highly likely that she will return to Stranger Things as Karen Wheeler for its final season, set to air next year. While specific details are scarce at this point, fans can look forward to the series release in 2025. Until then, you can catch up on the first four seasons of Stranger Things streaming on Netflix or watch Cara Buono’s performances within the Law & Order franchise on Peacock.
