What is Hashimoto's disease, the condition Arjun Kapoor revealed he's suffering from? Know its causes, symptoms, treatment and more

As an ardent fan of Arjun Kapoor, I find his courage and openness about his battle with Hashimoto’s disease truly inspiring. His resilience in defying the odds and continuing to shine in Bollywood despite the challenges is nothing short of remarkable. It’s fascinating to see how this condition, which affects his body so subtly yet significantly, can impact even something as mundane as a flight journey.

Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor has shared insights about his struggle with Hashimoto’s disease, explaining that stress can cause unexpected bodily responses such as weight gain during air travel due to the strain it places on his system. In this article, we’ll delve into the details of Hashimoto’s disease – its origins, signs, and potential effects on the human body.

According to a report from NIDDK, the health condition that Arjun Kapoor has been diagnosed with – Hashimoto’s disease – is an autoimmune disorder that specifically affects the thyroid, a tiny butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. This gland plays a crucial role in controlling the body’s energy usage across the system.

If the immune system erroneously targets the thyroid gland, it may lead to either hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), though the latter is less common. This condition results in an accumulation of white blood cells within the thyroid, thereby hindering its capacity to manufacture essential hormones that control critical body functions such as metabolism and heart rate.

Symptoms that often appear in Hashimoto’s disease are persistent tiredness, weight increase, sensitivity to cold temperatures, achy joints, dry and scaly skin, hair loss, and irregular periods. In certain instances, the thyroid damage may result in an overproduction of thyroid hormones for a short period, leading to a condition known as hyperthyroidism.

According to the same source, although the precise reason for Hashimoto’s is still unknown, genetic traits, viral infections, and specific medications have been identified as potential contributors. Individuals with a history of thyroid problems within their family are more susceptible to this condition. Factors in the environment, such as contact with toxins or radiation, might also be involved in its development.

Generally speaking, treatment often includes administering artificial thyroid hormones like levothyroxine to help reestablish typical thyroid functioning. In less severe instances, physicians might observe symptoms and thyroid levels without immediately prescribing medication.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor from Singham Again explained that at age 30 his body went into distress, causing him to seemingly gain weight as if he had taken a flight. However, he fought against this condition.

Additionally, he shared that both his mother and sister, Anshula Kapoor, experience the same health issue as him, and he’s observed noticeable transformations in his physical state throughout the years, especially during his acting career.

In terms of his career, Arjun Kapoor recently appeared in the film “Singham Again,” which was helmed by Rohit Shetty. This production also featured notable actors such as Ajay Devgn, Tiger Shroff, Kareena Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Deepika Padukone on screen with him.
