As a long-time gamer with a penchant for Broadway shows and an eye for Hollywood news, I find myself both intrigued and dismayed by the recent turn of events involving Nicole Scherzinger and Russell Brand.
Nicole Scherzinger is receiving criticism on social media due to her endorsement of a post by Russell Brand, the outspoken entertainer-turned-podcaster, who currently faces multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
On his own Instagram account, Brand shared a photo where he’s seen grasping a hat with the message “Put Jesus First Again.” This appears to be a nod towards the iconic MAGA (Make America Great Again) hats from the Trump campaign, as well as a reflection of Brand’s recent embrace of Christianity.
In the shared photos online, it seemed that Scherzinger had commented, “Where can I buy this hat?!” However, her comment on the post is now missing.
This week, authorities in the U.K. are looking into sexual misconduct accusations against Brand, and have requested that charges be filed against the ex-comedian by the country’s prosecutors. The Metropolitan Police in London has acknowledged receiving multiple reports of sexual crimes, not only in the city but also across the U.K., following a joint probe involving Channel 4’s Dispatches program and newspapers like The Times of London and The Sunday Times of London, conducted back in September 2023. During their broadcast, Dispatches detailed a range of serious allegations, including rape and sexual assault, against Brand.
The brand has rejected every allegation brought forth since 2006 up until 2013, a period that coincided with his peak popularity.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Scherzinger’s reps for comment on the post.
The controversy comes as Scherzinger is receiving rave reviews and attracting strong awards buzz for her performance in the Sunset Blvd. revival on Broadway. In a glowing review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s David Rooney wrote that, “Many wondered if the performer, made famous by early 2000s girl group the Pussycat Dolls, was too young, or if she had the stage presence and acting chops for the role. But those concerns vanish almost from the moment she’s hoisted by the chorus into the spotlight during Lloyd’s amusing live-capture opening credits, just as the title appears in the boldest of red fonts.”
Reps for Sunset Blvd. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Comments on the movie “Sunset Blvd.” seem to be turned off, yet numerous Broadway enthusiasts voiced their disappointment on Scherzinger’s personal Instagram, as they perceive her as having a favorable view of Trump.
“You don’t get to come into our community and spread your nonsense,” one comment read.
The show initially premiered on Broadway on October 23rd, but following its triumphant performance at London’s West End, it moved to New York for further performances.
