As a cinephile with a knack for apocalyptic thrillers and a soft spot for Ridley Scott’s cinematic masterpieces, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming collaboration between Scott and Paul Mescal in “The Dog Stars”! After their stellar performance in “Gladiator II,” I’m eager to see how these two talented artists will bring this post-apocalyptic tale to life.
Ridley Scott and Paul Mescal will join forces again, this time for the thrilling project titled “The Dog Stars“, following their previous team-up on “Gladiator II.
I’m thrilled to share that I might be stepping onto the silver screen in Scott’s upcoming film, tentatively scheduled for 2025. Before that, he’s got another project, a Bee Gees movie at Paramount, to wrap up first. In this new venture, I’ll be collaborating with Steve Asbell over at 20th Century Studios, and I can hardly wait!
The story, inspired by Mark L Smith’s adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 apocalyptic thriller, takes place in a future not far off where a mysterious pandemic has left American society in ruins. A solitary civilian pilot makes his home on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his loyal dog and a former marine. As per the producers’ synopsis, these two individuals, despite their differences, rely on each other for survival as they ward off roaming attackers. When a cryptic message is received via the pilot’s 1956 Cessna’s radio, a glimmer of hope emerges, prompting the pilot to chase the static-filled signal in search of a better life.
Cliff Roberts, Smith, and Scott Free are working on “The Dog Stars,” a film that serves as a sequel to Scott’s movie, “Gladiator II.” In “Gladiator II,” Mescal portrays an older Lucius Verus II, who is the nephew of Commodus from the initial film, played by Joaquin Phoenix. After being compelled into slavery, Lucius returns to Rome and takes up the role of a gladiator not as a ruler, but as a seeker of revenge and power. His ultimate goal is to restore the grandeur of Rome back to its people.
Deadline was first to report on plans for The Dog Stars.
