Thunderbolts* Team Name and Characters Explained in New Extended Marvel Trailer

As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who has followed the intricate web of stories since the early days, I must say that the latest glimpse into Thunderbolts* left me absolutely thrilled! The prospect of seeing Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, John Walker, Ava Starr, and the enigmatic Taskmaster on the big screen is nothing short of exhilarating.

Marvel Studios has given a special sneak peek of their upcoming film, Thunderbolts, at D23 Brazil. Thunderbolts marks the conclusion of Phase 5 for Marvel Studios and will introduce an unusual team consisting of characters who are not typically heroes, but rather assassins, black ops agents, and killers. The film is set to assemble characters and plotlines hinted at in various titles such as Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and the Wasp, among others. Although the initial trailer for Thunderbolts only provided a basic premise, Marvel Studios is now working to fill everyone in on the team’s composition.

In a unique sneak peek at the Marvel Studios segment during D23 Brazil, a three-minute and forty-one-second video titled Thunderbolts unfolds. The action-packed sequence finds Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) saving and subsequently arresting a team comprising Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). The trailer additionally showcases characters like Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and Bob (Lewis Pullman), each with their respective title cards and brief scenes that introduce them to the audience.

The distinctive sneak peek of the upcoming film, Thunderbolts, bears a striking resemblance to the 2013 Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, introducing an entirely new cast before their premiere. Given that Thunderbolts heavily references previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions like Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, this type of trailer analysis is beneficial to help viewers catch up without feeling excluded if they missed one of these installments. Additionally, the trailer’s choice of “Possum Kingdom” song follows the MCU’s trend of grunge music, with previous Thunderbolts trailers featuring “Where is My Mind” by the Pixies and the first Avengers trailer using “We’re in This Together” by Nine Inch Nails.

One Thunderbolts Team Member Seemingly Won’t Last Long

In the sneak peek for Thunderbolts, there are many intriguing details about the upcoming film; one of the most noticeable is that the character of Taskmaster seems to be missing from much of the footage shown. She’s not present in the initial scene with the car, and it doesn’t appear she joins the team when they meet Val in Avengers Tower. Furthermore, Taskmaster appears absent from most of the conversation scenes between characters, which seem to depict the final action sequence. This pattern hints at a smaller role for her, and there’s speculation that she might be one of the early casualties in the movie.

Meanwhile, the footage also reveals little about Lewis Pullman’s Bob, who comic fans know as the Sentry. The Sentry is likely the big threat that the Thunderbolts will need to stop. Marvel Studios so far has not shown Sentry in action, and while this could be something Marvel holds back until the actual release of the movie – we don’t really believe that will happen – the first true look at the character will probably come with a final trailer next year. The new footage of Thunderbolts* is the best so far, as it suggests an action-packed, banter-laden outing for this bunch of Marvel reprobates that could make them a winner with audiences.
